Cornell ED Chances for CAPS

<p>Thanks so much in advance for all of your advice!</p>

<p>I am a white male, rising senior from a small religious school planning to apply ED to Cornell’s CAS. I plan to major in China and Asia Pacific Studies. I’ve met with Dr. Xu, the director of the program, and communicate with him via email frequently, if that makes any difference.</p>

<p>GPA: 4.0 unweighted; 4.5 weighted (highest in history of my school)
Ranking: 1 out of about 75
SAT: 2110 (730 CR, 660M, 720R) (Planning to retake in October)
SAT II’s: Literature 750, US History 660, Math II 600 (Retaking in November)
AP Tests: US History 4, English Language 5</p>

<p>Most rigorous course load available. All honors and AP’s when available.</p>

<p>Note: Neither my school nor any local colleges offer anything in Chinese, so I have been studying Mandarin on my own since the 10th grade. </p>

<p>EC’s:
Founder/President of Kardz4Kidz- I sell handmade greeting cards with all proceeds benefiting a local children's hospital. Won a “Dedication to Community Service” award. (Grades 9-12)</p>

<p>Praise Band- Pianist/Vocalist, Leader- Leads entire student body in worship before chapel every week. (Grades 9-12)</p>

<p>Theater- 6 Leading and Supporting Roles, Theater Arts Student of the Year. (Grades 9-12)</p>

<p>Founding Member/Director/Composer of One Voice, a 6-voice a capella ensemble. I compose and direct most of the groups’ music, as well as sing. (Grades 10-12)</p>

<p>Student Body Representative- I started a program to work in the middle school to raise up leaders and political awareness. (Grades 9-12)</p>

<p>3-Year-Old Sunday School Teacher- I teach the 3-year-old Sunday School class at my church. (Grades 9-12)</p>

<p>Precinct Leader/County Youth Chair for 2008 Presidential Campaigns- I have worked to register voters, especially youth in my area. (Grades 11-12)</p>

Academic Achievement Award- highest academic honor for the highest GPA in the class (9-12)
Achievement in Mathematics- highest honor for academic achievement in mathematics (10-11)
Veterans of Foreign Wars' Voice of Democracy Essay Competition Scholarship Award (9-11)
Christian Leadership Award- highest honor for community service and leadership (9-10)
Theatre Arts Student of the Year (11)</p>

<p>Work:
Medical Office as medical records clerk and patient care coordinator. I also designed and maintain the office website. (Grades 10-12)</p>

<p>I visited Cornell in May and absolutely love it. I don't have any special hooks, but I truly want to go to Cornell and hope to be able to convey that and my passion for the CAPS major in my Cornell essay.</p>

<p>I think if you can raise your test scores a little bit, excellent chances.</p>

<p>I think you have a very good chance. Make certain your essays are well polished and that your letters of recommendation also support your interests in Cornell and the CAPS program.</p>

<p>not sure how many people the CAPS program takes, but to me your only limitation is the lack of asian related ECs...</p>

<p>you're definitely a strong candidate for CAS though...</p>
