Honors Bio teacher: I actively participated in his class.
Econ Teacher:She likes me.
Counselor Rec:
Dunno. Hopefully good because she knows me very well and calls out my name out loud every time I walk into her office. Might not know me well about me personally though.

Essays:
Common App:I wrote this based off sitting in the back of a classroom (Where all the bad kids sat lol) during my middle school years in urban China. My middle school was for poor rural children who had just arrived to the city from the impoverished countryside and how less than 40% graduates had opportunity to go to high school, not to say college. I then wrote about the difficulties for my best friend went through and my continuous support and help for him after realizing the existence of inequality and my own privilege, even after coming to the U.S.

Supplement (For Cornell CAS): Elaborated on development of my interest in the Biological Sciences from childhood to high school. How my high school internship made me realize that studying Biology was to help society. I tied this to sociology and to my realization of inequality during middle school and how my middle school experience compelled me to explore social issues in high school through things like MUN and AP Econ. Later referred to Bio/Society major at Cornell to show how various professors/programs at Cornell could help me reach explore my passions. Finished up with a sentence reference to my campus visit and my goal of becoming a physician who will make healthcare more available.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Extensive research experience

Reflection
I believe that my application was greatly strengthened by the extensive experience I had in engineering research both locally and at a summer program. This greatly qualified me for the major of Bioengineering, as CALS is looking for quite a specific applicant depending on your major.

Strengths:
Weaknesses: none
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Research experience
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Only applied to Cornell ED

General Comments:
Wherever you apply to and regardless of your admissions decision, remember that your undergraduate education does not define you. Best of luck to all applicants!

Common App 10/10 (English teacher counted it among top 6 in his 24-year teaching career), wrote about protesting a Trump rally, political polarization, and changing history for the better through grassroots organizations and ending gerrymandering.

Cornell Supplement: 9/10, wrote about passion for philosophy (Nietzsche) and modern Chinese history, went pretty specific on Cornell’s faculty and classes

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: English teacher, 9/10
Teacher Rec #2: US History teacher, 10/10
Counselor Rec: 7 or 8/10 - he doesn’t know me well but we have met frequently

Interview: met in Starbucks with a guy who majored in math. His English was ehhhh… a bit awkward discussion, but nothing that detracted from my app

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Philosophy
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large public high school (3000+ people)
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 200k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nada

Reflection

Strengths: Test scores, teacher recs, essays
Weaknesses: GPA, ec’s could’ve been better
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: that miserable 3.51 UW; 4.26 W didn’t quite make up for it. If it were even 3.7 or even 3.65, I feel like I would’ve gotten accepted
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: ed plox?

General Comments: depressed because now I don’t have a winter break, but was kinda expecting it. What’s even worse about my GPA is that it showed a downward trend; started with mostly A’s and a few B’s to mostly B’s and a C in junior year. That GPA though…really kills peeps in admissions. Guess I won’t be applying to any other Ivies.

doing this to help future students

**Decision: Accepted **

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): submitted b/c I had to, but it was quite low
ACT (breakdown): 33C (35E, 36M, 34R, 28S)
SAT II: 800 Math II, 790 Physics
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.87
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
AP (place score in parenthesis): it probably didn’t help that much but Physics C: Mech (5), Physics C: E and M (5), Calculus BC (5), Computer Science A (5), Microeconomics (5), Macroeconomics (5), English Lang (4), Chinese Lang (5), US Government (5)
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: Multivariable Calc/ODE, AP Chemistry, Programming 3 (it’s a university programming course), AP Statistics, Applied Science / Engineering, Honors English 12
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): haha none

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Dream in Code (president + co program leader) it’s a club that me and my friends created to help decrease the gender gap in STEM and teach middle schoolers to code, Math Team (captain), Mu Alpha Theta Math Honors Society, National Honors Society, Science Olympiad, local orchestra but that was a while ago
Job/Work Experience: none
Volunteer/Community service: volunteer at a nursing home, teaching assistant
Summer Activities: Intern at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I thought my common app wasn’t bad when I submitted it haha. Now that I reread it, there were definitely some parts I could have edited a lot more and there were some parts I don’t really like. I really liked my supplement though, probably one of my favorite essays. I just had an idea and went with it, with minor editing afterwards

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): So all three of my teachers submitted their letter…
Teacher Rec #1: 9; math teacher for both calc classes, also the sponsor of math team and she understands me a lot.
Teacher Rec #2: 9; physics teacher for honors + ap. somehow he knew me since i was in 7th grade, so he was really able to talk about my growth from a 7th grade student to how I was last year
Counselor Rec: 6; probably average
Additional Rec: 8? my economics teacher submitted his rec
Interview: I made it so awkward I think

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: partly? I forgot to submit the idocs oops (bad bad bad idea)
Intended Major: Computer Science (College of Engineering!)

General Comments :
congratulations to all those who got accepted! and for those who didn’t: good luck for the rest of the application season; you got this! also if you were rejected, you’ll find your new home somewhere :))

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nope

Reflection:
Counselor thought it was really 50 50 and I agree was hoping to get in but just didn’t stand out enough. In hindsight, applying ED really doesn’t boost your chances much the acceptance is just higher because more qualified applicants apply and recruited atheletes apply via ED. But, no regrets

Strengths: All As junior yr, a bit above average test scores for cornell acceptances, good bit of leadership
Weaknesses: GPA, Chem SAT, lack of hook, lack of huge accomplishment
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I’m not a great writer and I had to write my supplement in two days, also my freshman and sophomore grades were weak with a mix of As and Bs. No hook and no legacy make it tough.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
ED so idk yet
General Comments :
No one was accepted ED from my school, and we frequently send kids to all the ivies so this years results were pretty surprising.

Decision: Accepted

Objective: College of Engineering

National merit certificate sophomore year (we have public examinations in 10th grade), bunch of others from the school etc. do sports awards count? Got quite a few of them too.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
-National level swimmer (i.e on the state team, played many national level tournaments)
-National level water polo (same as above, vice-captain of state team in senior year)
-State level pistol shooter (air+sports) (i.e played in state-wide tournaments)

-Piano(8 years)

Job/Work Experience: none

Volunteer/Community service:
-Volunteered at a run organised for visually challenged people (2 years)
-Worked closely with a charity organization engaged with sanitation workers

Summer Activities:
-Only mentioning here because I couldn’t fit it anywhere else I got a letter of appreciation from the government because I helped develop the color schemes of posters, GDed a few cartoons etc, for an awareness project and those posters ended up becoming a huge deal and were displayed in a lot of big institutions.
-made a project in Physics about refractive indices and how the RI of water changes with temperature, depth and other parameters. My teacher incorporated it really well in her LOR.
-also made a project in chemistry where I analysed ionic radicals present in common prescription drugs, antacids etc. Again, teacher really emphasized upon it in her rec

Essays:
-Common app: I thought it was okay but I sent it over to someone at cc who was pretty appreciative of it. Prolly 8.5-9/10. Basically about how living in the rural parts of my country every summer when I was little shaped me as a person and how I’d like to enrich the lives of those living in such settings with accessible technology.
-Cornell: Pretty good, got my point across quite well. That essay really explained why engineering and WHAT I want to do as an engineer. 9.5/10. Basically about my love for problem-solving and my passion for developing tech that benefit all groups of people equally. Also outlined exactly what I wanted to work on and an engineering idea I’ve had in mind(better fuels, not posting the whole idea because it’s quite good)

Teacher Rec #1: Stellar. Physics teacher, taught me for 2 years, was my house mistress as well as the physics club coordinator. 9/10
Teacher Rec #2:Great as well. Got the highest marks in chem in junior year, plus she’s taught me for 3 years now. 9/10.
Counselor Rec: she essentially convinced my parents to convince me to apply abroad because my stats were decent. Safe to say she likes me. 8.5/10.
Additional Rec:none
Interview:none

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Mechanical engineering
State (if domestic applicant): –
Country (if international applicant): India

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
Antihook asian engineering, hook female engineering? POC but not really urm?

Reflection:

I have no idea why I got accepted. I really don’t deserve it. I had no intention of going abroad for undergrad and decided to apply in senior year after my counselor told my parents to make me. Took my first ever SAT in June this year, and the subject tests in October. People work so hard on their ivy apps while I did nothing…

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I think I was pretty clear about what I wanted to do as an engineer through my essays. Both essays focussed on being able to give back to society and my community after becoming and engineer.

Weaknesses: EC’s are quite in-depth but limited.

Why you think you were accepted: no idea, my app was pretty ordinary. I don’t think I deserve to get in. I was pretty sure about getting a rejection since I’m an international kid asking for loads of fin aid. And i won’t be continuing with sports either. Guess anything can happen.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: only applied to Cornell ED

Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: no clue.

    Essays (rating 1-10, details):
My CALS essay was extremely passionate and completely explained the history of my career and adventures in biology, beginning with my love for Pokémon–I connected Pokémon to biotechnology–that connected to my 4th grade ornithology class. I would rank that essay a 9 or 9.5 out of 10.
In terms of my personal statement for the Common App, it was weaker, but spoke to my summer activities and immense dislike for research, which I eventually overcame. I would give that essay a 6 or 7 out of 10, only because I disliked it.
    Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1 (Science):
My first recommender was my junior year Biology professor (my school begins with Physics in 9th grade, Chemistry in 10th, and Biology in 11th), who I immediately connected with on a personal and intellectual level. She knew everything about my interest in mathematics and biology, and I spoke to her daily about interesting topics in biology and synthetic biology (and I still do!). She also wrote a LOR for a summer science program to which I applied, and she sent it to me to read–it was incredible. Her LOR was probably earning of a 9.5 out of 10.
Teacher Rec #2 (Humanities):
My second recommender was also a junior year professor, but who instead taught my Food History class. My friend founded a knitting club with her as the advisor, and I became a co-president after helping out and making my desire to crochet and help others clear. I thoroughly enjoyed her class and she also knew me very well. I heard from other students that she’s written phenomenal LORs in the past, so I’m sure mine was strong as well and I would probe;y give her LOR a 9 or 9.5 out of 10.
Counselor Rec:
My counselor recommendation was probably also fantastic, because I connected with him on a personal level, too. He was my College Spanish teacher in my junior year, and is teaching my again this semester, but I would speak to him about Spanish and discuss my interests in life, not just science, all the time with him. He’s also the Associate Dean of Studies at my high school, which probably also had an impact. I would give his LOR an 8.5 out of 10.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview:
It was okay. My interviewer was time-pressed and had majored in AEM, so I had to explain everything science-related to him thoroughly. It was a successful interview, but it could’ve gone better.
