Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major and College: CALS, Animal Science
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: CTE (art school, but high school)
Ethnicity: African-American, Jamaican descent
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Less than $30k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation college student, URM, Child of Deaf Adults (C.O.D.A)

Strengths: Had a pretty good essay, had a job and an internship with the Bronx Zoo, good recommendation letters, (and let’s be honest here) affirmative action
Weaknesses: Low SAT score, never took the ACT, not having exactly a 4.0

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly, I think it was all about the extracurriculars. In my essay, I talked about how seeing a family of gorillas up close with only glass separating us made me realize that I really wanted to work with animals. It also helped to have gotten a change to sit in on an info session via Exploring Educational Excellence and visiting the campus (Cornell doesn’t take showing interest through attending events into consideration when they admit you; the trick is to include what RELEVANT information you can into your essay).

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere; I hadn’t applied to any school other than Cornell which is a BAD idea because they do have a 14% acceptance rate and it’s always good to have a backup plan

General comments:
Super excited about my admission! I was preparing myself for the rejection letter. I just want people to know that even though your application may not be the best (and the person above me has an AWESOME application, I’m upset FOR him, tbh), there’s always still a chance if you believe in yourself enough to apply.

Volunteer/Community service:
Music Educator - Blues in the Schools Program

Essays: I’m not sure how to rank it, but I have one bit of advice: be playful. I tried to make my essays fun to read, even if that meant making fun of myself for the majority of the essay. For my personal statement I wrote about why I’ve eaten a PB and J everyday for lunch for the the past 7 years. For my supplement I wrote about how I would specifically contribute to Cornell (in the physics and music departments) and how Cornell would better me as an individual. Do not boast in either of your essays; your intelligence will shine through in humble writing if done well.

Recommendations: I never saw them

Reflection

Strengths: I though I had really good essays that showed my passion for my major and for the college, rigorous course load, high weighted GPA, internship at a hospital, high math SAT score (740)
Weaknesses: my unweighted GPA was not perfect but ok, low SAT reading score (640), I didn’t take AP Chem which they recommend in the CHE, bad sophomore year grades (my only inconsistent year due to personal issues), I didn’t submit my AP scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I guess my stats could have been more stellar, and I regret not taking AP Chem, I kinda hoped that CHE would look past stats and see that I am very dedicated and would have fit very well into their school but oh well
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: this is the first school I’m hearing back from. I also applied to BU, NYU, USC, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and UMD

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection

Strengths: URM, good SAT, EC’s in other countries, really made myself seem like a good fit for my major
Weaknesses: GPA, the fact that I do online school
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: not sure
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:

General Comments : I AM SO FREAKING PUMPED THAT I GOT I THOUGHT I HAD NO CHANCE. GO BIG RED!!!

Reflection

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Personal Statement: (8.5/10) Thought it was personal and had a voice. Showed it to my english teacher and university councillor, both liked it.
Supplement: (8/10) About a visit to a well known architectural firm. Could have done more work looking back, mainly in building a strong case for myself. Should have showed it to more people.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Couldn’t read.

Teacher Rec #1 and #2: Had my art and math teacher write them. Both classes I’m fond of and teachers like me.
Counselor Rec: I believe my counselor wrote a good rec for me, knows me well and we’ve had several meetings.
Additional Rec: Faculty advisor for the Yearbook club, which I have heavy involvement in.

Interview: Mandatory for AAP. Thought it went just ok. Interviewer was a TA. We didn’t have amazing rapport (TA was unenthusiastic and monotone), but I attribute it to the early Monday morning.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: no
Intended Major and College: AAP, Architecture
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male

Reflection

Strengths: Spend A LOT of time making my physical portfolio (creating new pieces, designing layout on Adobe InDesign, and shipping it to Cornell). Strong design based ECs related AAP. Also thought I could contribute to Cornell in two areas: Cornelian Yearbook and their Orchestra (Double Bassists are rare).
Weaknesses: SAT score and GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Seems like quite a few AAP applicants were deferred. Maybe the 15% increase in ED/EA applicants made the competition tough.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: None. Will be working hard on RDs come winter break…

General Comments : Hope this is helpful for somebody. Filling this out has certainly helped me reflect a bit on my disappointment and what to do moving forward.

Reflection

Strengths: sports? idk basketball and track was a huge part of my hs life, but i guess my academics weren’t good enough.
Weaknesses: standardized tests. standardized tests. standardized tests.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m an applicant who recently got a green card and applied for financial aid, bc i can’t pay 70000 for college. I guess if you are an unwelcomed asian international you might as well pay more money. My tests scores were also low. Anyway, really bummed to get rejected from my dream school.

Reflection: I’m super psyched, and honestly can’t believe it. I wrote all this to help ease the admissions process for future applicants. I know I pored over this page for 2021 ED, and I hope my results will encourage people.
