I was deferred from ED Cornell.
The letter mentioned that I may send additional documents. Just wanted to ask- Is it beneficial to send additional documents, contact the admission office via letter stating that even tough i'm deferred, Cornell is still my 1st choice? hat should I do & what are other Cornell Defers doing(except from applying to other places)?

send in additional documents if you have them, for example your semester grade or December SAT if you took it. Don’t send a letter though. My counselors told me that they already know they are your first choice and repeating yourself won’t necessarily give you a higher chance

Cornell knew it was your first choice. Once you are deferred, you could easily fall in love with other schools - Duke, UPenn, NU, Harvard, Dartmouth, Tufts, Berkeley, Rice, UCLA, UVA, UMich…It is important to let them know again that Cornell is still your first choice.

I posted on the 2016 admission thread about this, so I won’t repeat myself.

Now these r 2 conflicting opinions. Anyone here who can help me solve this dilemma?

Cornell’s common data set says that ‘interest in the school’ is not a factor in admissions.

Nevertheless, I can’t see how a short note telling them they’re still your #1 can hurt your chances. It probably won’t help much either, though.

I’d send the letter.

I have a family friend of mine( i know him since like 10 yrs) whose a Cornell alum and also went to the same college i applied to. So should I tell her to send a recco.? Will that suffice?

It matters to Cornell whether it’s your first choice, but maybe not as much as other schools. When you ED a school, it WAS your first choice, after you got defer other schools could easily become your top choices.

As far as asking an alum to write you a LOR, unless she has something really meaningful to say, it is really not going to be that helpful.

I sent a letter letting them know that Cornell is still my first choice and I wrote about what I’ve been up to. I also had a recommendation from a councilwoman that I worked for during the past elections to help show what I have been up to since my application was sent in early October.

DS was in the same position last year. Sent a letter to say it was still his first choice, and to update information and also had another rec sent from his summer employer. It didn’t hurt, because he did get in regular decision. It’s important not to whine in your letter though. Be positive and don’t ramble.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
Will send in the letter. Fingers crossed and hope for the best.
