Question's basically the same as the headline. Does Cornell want to look at Quarter 1 or Semester 1 grades for Early Decision applicants?

Your guidance counselor will periodically be sending all your grades for senior year.

Cornell won’t be able to see your semester grades as ED decisions are released in mid-December, before all that can be finalized.

There’s a good chance they’ll either request or be sent your quarter grades, though, so hopefully they’re good–I had the same question last year and the general consensus was that they DON’T look at quarter grades, but we were evidently wrong, since many of us with average midterm grades were pushed into the RD pile.

Best of luck!

Mid semester (quarter) grades are not required for ED, but proactive GC will send in your mid semester grades. This is especially helpful if you continue to take the most rigorous courses and are showing upward trend. My kid applied ED few years back and we asked her GC to send in her mid semester grades. My nephew, who never took any APs until senior year due to 10th grade transfer from an international school, also sent in his mid semester grades (with all As) was admitted ED.

If admitted ED, Cornell will still request for your end of year transcript and expect you to maintain your GPA. If you should decide to change courses spring semester, you’ll need to inform Cornell. They don’t want you to slack off senior year.

I know that when my D applied ED, a Cornell admissions officer called her GC about 2 weeks before ED notification date checking on her current grades.

I asked the same question when I applied last year. Here’s the link:

My GC sends Q1 grades, which will arrive to be considered with my ED application. If you get in ED, anything sent after that is simply to make sure you don’t significantly drop off (at least that is the case for me as our semester ends in late Jan).

Cornell requires the final transcript. The admission can be rescinded if there is a big drop in GPA.

My D and I were on the live twitter ED chat on 10/29 and and we asked the question about 1stQ grades and the adcom rep said yes, they do need to see them. Here is the copy of the tweet

.@annwank Yes. Ask your counselor to send first quarter grades to support your early decision application as soon as they are available.

@annwank I wonder why they do not put that on their website? I was not aware that Cornell asks for quarter grades. What do they do if many early applicants do not send them? Because I suspect many applicants are not aware of this either…

What would adcom think about an ED applicant who has well above a 4.0 gpa based on soph and jr year, but first quarter sr year has 2 As and 4 Bs, with one of the grades possibly being a B-? All classes are AP and honors.

This is not due to slacking off, but due to a rigorous load, including honor physics and AP calc --and student is more of an English/History kid.

That is fine, first quarter’s not really a big deal anyway.

Hey! When did your daughter apply to Cornell?
HELP i’ve been struggling really badly in ap calc bc and I think ill end up with a c in that class
i have a(or one b+)s in all my other classes (3 aps/honors out of 6 classes including gym) but im really worried about the C i have right now, will it be a major problem when ed-ing
@skdud712 It certainly won’t help
First quarter or first semester grades will be the last indicator to adcoms whether you could do college level work. So yes, those grades are important.
