Cornell ED Question

Hi, I am a NYS resident, and was curious about the costs for Cornell. I definitely want to go to CALS, and I have the requirements for both ILR, and the Hotel School. I want to apply to one of the second school listed. I like the options avaiable at both school, and would be happy to apply to both. However, personally I would like to apply to the Hotel School before ILR. The problem with this, is the cost of the Hotel School. This school is not state funded, and CALS is. I wanted to apply ED to Cornell, but I am not able to afford the Hotel School, in fact I can barely afford to go to CALS (I am not eligible for Financial Aid). Am I allowed to apply CALS early decision, and the Hotel School regular decision? If not I will probably just apply to CALS and ILR through early decision. Also, if you get accepted into two of the colleges early decision, what would you pay if one was state funded, and one was not, or if they were both state funded?

a) No, you cannot apply to CALS ED and to Hotel RD
b) You can only be accepted at one of the colleges. If your primary school thinks you aren’t right for them, but are an exceptional candidate for your secondary school, they will forward your application to them.

very few candidates actually get their 2nd choice - you have to apply to a primary school and then a secondary school showing how both are a good fit - at the same time. If not deferred but not accepted ED you do not get to apply again to RD. Most of the cross over is between Ats and Engr for things like ComSci and Physics, and Arts and CALS and HumEc for Bio - pre-Med… Both Hotel andILR expect more fit and aren’t looking for corss-over candidates.

do not apply to the Hotel school early decision if you need finaid and are not eligible because you won’t get it and then you will have a binding agreement to attend the Hotel School that you are not comfortable honoring. ED is binding at Cornell. If accepted, you agree to withdraw all your other applicantions at all other colleges.

Good luck - hope I’ve answered the question I think you asked.

Hi, I have all the requirements, and could definitely prove that I am geared toward business, that is why I wanted to apply to cals (AEM), and another business school. I actually didnt know that was how the secondary school system worked. I thought that i would send my app to both colleges, and that they would both look at me, and either accept me, or deny me. I thought that if I was accepted into both colleges, I would have the option a dual major. WOW i was completely off. TY very much. I had one other question, would it look better to only apply to one school, or two schools, because I definetely want to go to CALS, and ILR is my second choice school in total. But if would increase my chances by applying just to CALS AEM, I would definitely do that. Thank you.

you don’t hurt your chances - it just doesn’t happen very often.

Thank you very much, if it cant hurt, I will def apply to CALS (primary), and ILR (secondary). Thank you all for the help, I really appreciate it.
