Cornell email

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that our email addresses are simply our net id's? I think its not professional at all. Does anyone know if you can change it?

There are hundreds of thousands of people associated with the university. Can you think of a better way? I don’t think anybody else has ever thought it was unprofessional.

Of note: If you are the only Joe Smith at Cornell, your email address will also be joe.smith@cornell.edu

I can definitely think of a better way. Let people choose the email themselves.

but then u will have emails that are unprofessional like Hi.ImBob@cornell.edu or ILikeCats@Cornell.edu

still better, at least its the student’s decision.

don’t like it? then forward your cornell email through your own email address

problem SOLVED!

That doesn’t solve anything…

I actually like NetIDs–they make emailing someone a lot easier because you just need to know their initials and a number. It’s not unprofessional at all. There’s also no reason for a college to let you pick your email; all that would do is complicate things.

Since when is the internet professional?

Since when are current pre-frosh such ignorant spoiled drama queens?

This is a world class research university.

If you want to put your worst foot forward, make sure to put xoxDuRtYSlUtxox @ gmail on your resume for contact information. Til then, realize that every university assigns you your e-mail address.

Except it does. If you want to e-mail people from your goofy a** e-mail, do it through google, and any mail that goes to your Cornell account will be sent there.

But then you’re just using regular gmail? Linking accounts wont change any address.

I personally think mine should be ChanandlerBong@cornilliams.edu.

Hell to the yeah.

;)

I call dibs on ILikeCats@Cornell.edu

i used to go to a large state school before i transferred over, and i think their email system was much more convenient and professional. The system would just take the first initial of your first name, plus your last name @ cornell.edu. (Example: jsmith13@cornell.edu) If that email already exists, the system would just add a number to it. problem solved! the current netID system makes it more difficult for an employer/professor/etc to identify the email with the individual sender just by checking the “To:” field.

i am hesitant to use my gmail/hotmail/yahoo email account to email an employer because ■■■■■■ doesn’t the same professional weight as @cornell. Now that the cornell is switching over to a new email client, it could be an opportunistic moment to make the change.

that would require the simultaneous and coordinated change of hundreds of thousands of e-mail addresses.

then it would entail the change of hundreds of list-servs, and the updating of thousands of contact books.

Not as easy as it sounds.

For the record, you can use gmail to send email from your cornell account. Some providers will unmask it, but if your gmail is your name or something equally professional anyway, it doesn’t matter.

Does cornell allow you to have an alias to use as your email. Obvious it would need to be unique, such as firstname.lastname@cornell.edu. I know some folks that are Cornell alumni and I notice their emails addresses follow the firstname.lastname@cornell.edu format. Just not sure if it is because they used to give out addresses like that or if it is an alias.

Time magazine is a world class influential magazine that has been around for more than 80 years.

[Who Are the World’s Most Influential People in 2009? - The 2009 TIME 100 Finalists - TIME](http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/0,28757,1883644,00.html?iid=redirect-time100)

Now go see who is number 1 on the poll.

I think that your initials and numbers are perfectly professional. In fact, I like how short and simple it is. My current email is first name middle initial last name at blahblah.com. It’s professional, but really long, to the point of being too long.

I happen to like it.

…I am trying to see the relevance here…

anyone else as confused as me?
