Right now I'm deciding on whether to do ED Cornell for engineering (specifically computer science) or Columbia SEAS (engineering school). I realize that Cornell is much stronger than Columbia for comp sci (ranked #5 vs. #17), but I have to factor in $30k additional debt. Based on this, which would you recommend me to apply to?

The cheaper option.

Graduating without debt is so worth it, in my opinion. After 5 or 10 years your school won’t matter as much (if at all) compared to your skill.

I don’t think a degree from Columbia should ruin your life too much.

Free ride. Ithaca sucks in the winter.

Why would SEAS be debt free but Cornell not?

If you do not take the “free” option, don’t ever post here again…joking.

TAKE FREE!

Columbia is a better school. Go there.

Cornell’s CS is very good. But that doesn’t mean that Columbia’s CS isn’t strong either.
I think you are better off with Columbia for two reasons:\
- debt free
- it’s located in NYC, you can find internship meanwhile. Google has an office at NYC as well. This Columbia CS major worked for google as an intern and has developed an application (something to do with ads on Google TVs), and now he’s a google employee.

Cornell is at Ithaca, which means you are going to stuck in the middle of a beautiful town. But then you wouldn’t have the extra extra extra extra fun and opportunities that NYC might offer.

But if both are debt free, I think either one is fine, but maybe Columbia is still a better option in turns of gaining more industrial experiences.
