For anyone who has been accepted into the engineering school or for anyone that is applying this year. I am wondering in your Why Engineering essay did you/do you have to talk about specifically why Cornell for engineering or can you just talk about your interest in engineering in general.

Pretty sure that the majority of my essay dealt with my interest in engineering, but I added why Cornell towards the very end. I couldn't look at it again seeing as how I already submitted it, but that's the basic breakdown of my essay. Good Luck!

I talked about how I could practically solve the problems in the Environment (i am doing Enviro Engineering) and how Cornells programs could better suit me to make my goals a reality.

We attended an Engineering info session this Fall. The admissions counselor stressed: If you can substitute any other college where you mention Cornell-you have not been specific enough. You need to stress why Cornell engineering. Do some research as to why Cornell Eng is for you-remember only the admissions people from Engineering are reading your essays! My son was accepted ED with great grades & stats (like the rest of you)-but just SAT I's in the high 600's. SAT II in the low 700'2. Typical extras, great recommendations. A few engineering extracurriculars in HS-nothing outrageous though (didnt invent a fuel efficient vehicle). Great essays that he wrote (they can tell). Very sincere. Spent a lot of time having his english teacher critique them. Did a lot of re-writes. The essay can really set you apart from the numbers. Good luck to all!

You need to dig down through the Cornell engineering Web site information to find some specific resources to write about. Mentioning a specific faculty name or two can't hurt, either. Specificity is crucial to convince them that you have a good understanding of why Cornell is the right school for you.
