Cornell Engineering vs Rice Engineering

My s. is in Engineers without Borders (EWB) and is part of the Nicaragua team. He spent 2 weeks there over xmas break (paid for inf full by EWB). He's currently applying for internships for the summer, and the EWB experience has been very impressive to companies. EWB's International conference is this weekend at Rice http://the.ricethresher.org/news/2006/02/10/engineerswithoutbordersconference (the headline says its the national conference, but this is an error. The text of the article correctly lists it as the international conference).

well eureka...i really dont think your car comparison is appropriate at all with what ur trying to say...if anything..rice is a mercedes too. i hated the atmosphere at cornell...there is this bridge that you have to go past to get to the dorms. people jump off it everyyear because of the depressing atmosphere. i wont say its a bad school, its good, but the atmosphere is not the same at all. i sat in classes at cornell and at rice and frankly i was far more impressed by the science department in rice because of its position as a reaseach college. everybody there was qualified but it just wasnt the same. rice has a very good engineering program. the atmosphere is awesome. small classes. everybody knows u, your proffesors actually know ur name.

Of course, Serge, all analoges are inept. But the fact remains that if the goal is to expand one's horizons by going to a national school, Cornell hands down beats Rice. For a Texan, I am sure being accepted at Rice opens doors-in Texas. But anyone from NJ or Calif who thinks that Rice is a national school is mistaken. That is why the London newspare rankings of "world class" schools bury Rice, whereas Cornell is one of the best in THE WORLD.

Those rankings mean very little if you are trying to apply them to the "real world" like you seem to be doing. I mean, have you ever talked to anyone that has had a difficult time with getting a job because it says Rice on their resume and not Cornell? You offer no new information. You are interpreting an international ranking as a judge of how much a "national" school Rice is, whatever that means. Are you trying to conclude that Rice is not very "prestigious"?

There have been many philosophical discussions on the value of prestige, and I won't get into them here. But to say that Cornell expands one's horizon more so than Rice is simply an ignorant statement.

cornell has the #1 suicide rate among college students...not a very happy place.

my friends who actually attend cornell tell me the most engineers there have no lives--they're nerds. i think you'll find the opposite true at rice.

while i stayed at rice last weekend i met 3 people that had transferred to rice from cornell and they told me how much of a sad place it was and how many people killed themselves. the place is definitly not a good atmosphere. your whole statement is pretty ignorant i would say because even though it might not be "prestigious" in ur definition, it is still a highly respected shool and is the leading school in some areas. the nanotechnology program has 2 noble prize winners, while the undergraduate physics program is considered the hardest in the nation and graduate schools use a correction factor of one in the GPA for the physics program. u will never have troble finding a job with a rice diploma and it will not be overlooked just because you didnt have cornell. your rankings dont mean anything.

yea....cornell=souless nerds
rice= cool people that can do integrals lol

I applied to cornell on the offchance the princeton, rice, and mit reject me.

It is too cold, big, and seems blah. Pretty though.....

nice one serge; and about transfers FROM cornell, when i visited in october (during nod ;)) i met this guy who transferred from cornell and he tried to convince me to not apply....so i took his advice and didnt....and im really happy w/my decision.

cornell has the number 1 suicide rate? where did u pull that out of?

only 9 students took their lives in the last 10 years

yea...rice is better...the students i met at rice that had transferred from cornell told me how bad it was

It's really disgusting that Rice proponents would raise unconfirmed "suicides" as a means of propelling their school's standing. There have been suicides at Rice too. Why on earth would this be a factor in determining the worth of a Rice education versus Cornell educaton? Obviously 99.99% of students at both schools graduate without attempting suicide. Here's the truth: Rice is a reginal Texas school whereas Cornell is an Ivy school. Rice doesn't even have the world or national prestige of Duke, Vanderbilt or Emory, clearly the South "superstars". Why? Rice has an identity problemwithin serious academia. They are trying to rectify that by accepting only high SAT scorers so as to boot their rankings in good ol' US News.Well, the real world knows the truth.

eureka....go post at cornell with ur "real world" ur statements are all based on what the "word" thinks. do something and choose whatever school u wish to go to and if its cornell great. but dont choose a university based what a book says. also, a "regional standing" are u kiiding me...it is highly recognized in some areas. do some reading. no the real world doesnt know the truth...what truth are you talking about...ridiculous.

eureka...your take on rice is EXTREMELY flawed. the only reason why some may think rice as "less prestigious," if any at all, is because rice has a much smaller class than those of comparable institutions. Find me a strong research school with a class size around 700 or fewer (cal-tech doesnt count). you can't...but i suppose there is the other reason, which has already been identified by the president and is being addressed, is its previous lack of focus in the humanities department. And they are not accepting only students w/high SATs..i know plenty of 1300-ers who are matriculating. I think you need to check your references and do a little more research before you vilify an instution.

it kinda sounds like a bitter denial to me....or jus a hater. here a rice we shake them haters off. everybody is friendly

word..............
