I am a rising senior and looking to apply to cornell early decision. The one thing that will make or break my decision is the equestrian team. I have only been riding for 4.5 years but I have been working hard. I really would like to go to a college with a good hunt seat team. Can anyone give me more information about the team? I have contacted the coach but have not heard back. Also, is it really hard to get on the team? Thanks in advance
I mean make or break my decision of whether or not to apply ed, I reread and it looks like I’m being cocky like I already got in which wasn’t intended
The IHSA program is set up so that a team requires less experienced riders, so being a newcomer to the sport isn’t an obstacle. In fact, many top riders continue to ride on the circuit with their own horses rather than join the school team which creates nice opportunities for more “regular” folks. I would try the coach again to find out more about how the team is selected, but I’m going to guess there can be no assurances. I’d recommend you keep your focus on how you’ll continue to ride whether or not you make the team with the goal, of course, being a place on the team.
Ok. Thanks!
My D was on the Hunt Seat team while at Cornell. The coach is tough to get a hold of during the summer, so don’t necessarily worry about getting a hold of her. Watch out during orientation week for info regarding tryouts. If you are a decent rider that hasn’t ridden in many “rated” shows, you would probably be in demand; the IHSA showing level you compete at depends on how many blue ribbons you have received at certain levels at rated shows. Unfortunately, it is sometimes a numbers game as far as how many riders are needed at each level, and how many spots are already filled by upper classmen.
Since it is a Varsity D1 team, you also will have to put time in at the gym as well as ride. Each team member also has to help with horse chores during the week. All in all, it is a great bunch of girls, and has been an awesome experience. The team has won the Regional title a number of times, and went to Nationals last year.
The Varsity Polo team is also an option. While they seem to take quite a few players to practice, it seems only a few actually play competitively. There is also a Club Dressage team. Good luck!
