That question was addressed in a Cornell admission blog post. Yes, there is a chance that both schools can read both essays. Not a guarantee, but a possibility.

Will my essays for both my primary and alternate choice be read by both colleges/schools? It is possible that both colleges/
schools will review your primary and alternate choice essays.

I can’t answer that for you as I don’t work in admissions. You need to ‘make your case’ for why you would be the perfect fit for the program within the college.

Well, I talked about an experience in both (me working in a lab at U of Toronto)…

The passage in which i described this is identical but everything else is not although some of the ideas are similar (eg. research opportunities although one was about honors program while other was about CAS)

Would it be worthwhile to paraphrase some things? I want to submit it tomorrow :$

My suggestion: unless you are applying to a major/program that is identical/very similar in both schools (ex. Bio for CAS and CALS), then you should NOT have same things in both or even close. Paraphrasing might be ok but to a minimum. The point of the essays is for you to separate that school from the rest in terms of your preference and liking. And yes there is a chance (albeit no one really knows how much of one) that the schools look at BOTH supplementary essays so I would just be safe and write completely different essays as there is enough info out there for you to make that distinction clear. Just my .02 cents…

But yea, the similarity is my narrative regarding one of my experiences as one essay asks for how my experiences affected what i chose and the other asks for 2 intellectual interests.

Anyways, thanks! im gonna rework my essays a bit
