Cornell "fit"?

What exactly is this? I thought this was the fit with the school, as in why you wanted to study there instead of any of the other universities in the US. But some people say it's the fit of your extracurriculars with your declared major? Which is it?

Well I have a D who went through the whole process just last year…and we still don’t know! She applied to CHE as a Human Development major. I got a lot of advice on this forum urging her to find EC’s that were related to the field of Psychology. She had outstanding EC’s (class president, captain of swim team, vice president of theatre) but none that had much to do with her major. She applied ED & was accepted (with probably slightly below average stats & no “hook”). In her CHE speciific essay she talked about how having two psychologist as parents & growing up in a small town helped hone her powers of observation, but I don’t really know if they consideed that demonstrating “fit”.

“Fit” is generally about the match between you and the college- not you and your potential major. That includes your academic prep, interests, strengths and experiences, etc, and the college’s location, majors, challenges, resources, opportunities, social life, etc.

The real settling of whether you indeed fit your major is done later in sophomore year.

I think some are confusing this with “focus” - the idea that what you think you want for a major is reflected in some carefully chosen hs ECs. Eg, a STEM prospect who does math-sci activities, maybe vols at a hospital, etc.

Thank you so much! :)
