Cornell Fraternity Rankings 2012

I'm a senior graduating this spring, and figured I have a much better grasp on the frat scene than most freshmen/sophomores. Here they go:

Chi Psi: A very respected house on West with a 'state school' mentality. Their house is in a great location and is very nice on the inside and outside. Their brotherhood is closer than most on campus, and overall very cool. Mix well with top sororities, but some brothers pay more attention to drinking than the girls. They had a great 2012 pledge class, and their previous ones were also very good. Their pledging is extremely trying.

Psi U: A wealthy house with a great reputation on campus. Their house is nice and contains a large squash court. Their brothers are cool guys, but very WASPy and come off as snobbish or elitist.. They have great sorority relations with top sororities. Their 2012 rush didn't go too well, and they had to give bids to kids they didn't initially want.

Sig Phi: A WASPY house next to Psi U. Their house is very nice looking, and has an indoor squash court. Their brotherhood is fairly small, and consists of mostly self-proclaimed 'pretty boys'. Mix well with top sororities, but are somewhat limited by their small size. Their 2011 pledge class was severely lacking, as only 8 pledges accepted bids, but their 2012 pledge class was much better, and overall very good.

Sig Chi: A very reputable frat on North campus. Their house is very nice inside and out, but in a bad location. Mostly solid guys, but do have some questionable brothers, though. They have very good sorority relations, throw very fun open parties, and have a good mix of guys in the house. Their 2012 pledge class was fairly mediocre, but still better than most houses. Their pledge process is extremely vigorous, and not all pledges end up becoming brothers.

Sig Pi: A pretty cool house on West that is fairly classy. Their house is in a spectacular location and has a large balcony. The brotherhood is pretty cool overall, and is said to be improving. Have great sorority relations for the most part. Their 2011 pledge class was subpar, but their 2012 pledge class was better.

Delta Chi: A pretty cool, but not very fratty, house on North. Their house is huge but in a bad location. Their brothers are known to be "pretty boys" and "friend zone" guys, but are overall nice and cool. The house is known for having many gay brothers. Don't party very hard, but have good sorority relations. Very good 2012 pledge class. They try very hard to exude an image of being sophisticated and classy to a point where it's very obviously all for show.

Ato: An athletic lacrosse house on West with a decent rep. Their house is small and not very nice, but in an excellent location. Their brotherhood is overall pretty cool, but there is disunity between the brothers on the lacrosse team, which makes up the majority of the house, and the "filler" brothers who aren't. Their sorority relations are pretty good. Good 2012 pledge class that fits their mold well.

Chi Phi: A good house on West with a lot of sprint football an rugdy players. Their house is nice on the inside and out, but in a sort of out-of-the-way location. Their brotherhood is pretty athletic and known to start fights. They have decent sorority relations with middle-tier sororities and throw decent open parties. Their 2012 pledge class was good, with some athletic guys as usual.

Alpha Delt: A house that has declined immensely over the past few years, to the point they're becoming irrelevant on campus. They have a very nice-looking house that resembles a castle. Known to be snobby and down to earth, but their newer pledge classes are a lot less wealthy and cool. Many weirder guys now. Barely mix due to social probation. They have some remnants of decent sorority relations, but considering they're perpetually on social probation and haven't been doing too well overall, they may not last much longer. Their 2012 pledge class wasn't very good; it seems they aimed for numbers over quality. Their pledging process is absolutely terrible. Their house has been constantly on social probation, so they barely have mixers. As part of their punishment, an "advisor" will now live in their house to ensure they're not breaking any rules, almost like a dorm RA.

Du: A meathead house with some athletic guys who try to act very "bro". Their house is very nice-looking on the outside, and is right near collegetown. Their brothers are pretty athletic and try very hard to act like 'bros', which is mostly a show. Good relations with middle-tier sororities. Their 2012 rush went poorly, resulting in a pretty bad pledge class. Throw fun parties, and known for their Clam Bake in the spring.

Tep: A Jewish fraternity that rose a bit since Pike was kicked off campus a few years ago. The house is not only way out of the way on North, but looks like it's going to collapse because it's in such a bad condition. Their brotherhood is overall cool and mostly Jewish, but has some oddballs. Decent sorority relations, mostly with Jewish sororities. Their 2012 pledge class was good, and they're said to be rising. Somewhat hard pledging. Their national chapter has recently declared bankruptcy, which could limit their funds further and prevent any renovations.

Phi Psi: A pretty good house on West with many swimmers. Their house is physically nice and in a good location on West. For the most part their brothers are cool, but some are fairly weird. Decent relations with middle-tier sororities. They had a very subpar 2012 pledge class. Long and pretty hard pledging process.

Phi Sig: A rising house on West in a great location. Their house has an excellent central location on West campus. Their brothers are mostly cool, but there are a few nerdier guys. Mix pretty well with middle-tier sororoties. Their 2012 pledge class was pretty solid. Have a good setup for parties, and throw a good amount of fun events, but their basement is poorly designed.

Lambda Chi: A decent house near Collegetown, known to have a good amount of gay brothers. Their physical house is pretty mediocre and not very notable. They have a very diverse group of guys, consisting of apparently quite a few gay or feminine brothers, giving them the nickname 'Ramda Guy.'. Mix fairly well with middle-tier sororities. Their 2012 pledge class was pretty good. They throw fun open parties, including their Foam Party.

Fiji: A big, white, but very cramped house on West Campus. Their house is large but oddly laid out and very dirty. Pretty cool brotherhood, but have some weirdos. Pretty good relations with middle-tier sororities. Their house has been on the decline, but had a good 2012 pledge class. Very hard pledging, which was documented in a paper called "Hazed and Confused" a few years ago by one of the many kids who depledged FIJI.

Llenroc: A fairly low-key, somewhat nerdy house on West. They live in Ezra Cornell's old house, so it is absolutely stunning and has a unique feeling, but is not in the greatest of locations. Their brotherhood overall is pretty nerdy, but with some cool guys. Their rep with sororities is pretty shotty. Their pledge classes are usually not the greatest, but their 2012 class was surprisingly large and better than usual. Apparently have a very hard pledging process that almost got them in trouble. Good open parties, but a cramped and small dance floor.

Sig Nu: A frat mainly for football players that is fairly low-key or forgotten about. Their house is in a bad location, but overlooks a gorge and is nice on the inside. Their brothers are mostly on the football team, and devote most of their effort to the team, so the house is somewhat forgotten about. Good but low-key sorority relations. Their pledge classes are usually good and always similar: football guys. They have very few open events, but sometimes have after-hours.

Sig Ep: A dorm-like house on West in a decent location. Their house is pretty nice on the inside, but very ugly from the outside. They pick up a random group of kids for their pledge classes. Their brotherhood is somewhat cool, but with some awkward and weird brothers. Their sorority relations are decent with the middle-tier. Their 2012 pledge class was very subpar and small, which forced them to go into Second Round rush, along with other lower-tier frats such as DTD. They have a four-year "member development" process instead of one-semester pledging.

Agr: A rising ag frat on North Campus with some pretty cool guys. Their house is fairly large and clean. The brothers are mostly cool, with the exception of a few sketchy ones. Have decent sorority relations and pretty good open parties. They have organized philanthropic work with some good sororities in 2011. Had a good recent pledge class.

Sammy: A mediocre Jewish house next to the freshmen dorms on North Campus by Dixon. Their house is somewhat small and looks like a dorm. Their brothers are fairly nerdy, and despite their location their parties have surprisingly low attendanc, but are pretty fun. Decent sorority relations with the middle-tier, particularly with Jewish sororities. Pretty good 2012 pledge class.

Phi Tau: A decent house on the down low on North campus. Their house is nice and pretty clean on the inside, but is at the same time small and out of the way. Their brotherhood has a various mix of guys, but with many nerdy guys. Decent sorority relations with the middle tier. Their 2012 pledge class was good. Had many asians.

Pi Kapp: A decent house on North with some cool guys, but doesn't party that much. Their house is clean, but way out of the way on North campus. Their brotherhood is somewhat cool, but at the same time pretty nerdy. There's not much brotherhood unity. Their sorority relations are mediocre. Their 2012 pledge class was pretty good. Don't party very hard, and have strict house rules that are enforced with a Hearing Board.

Thumpty: A house infamous for drug use. Their house is very nice and even has hidden speakeasies from the prohibition era. Many of their brothers are pretty weird or sketchy, but there are still some good and cool guys in Thumpty. They love getting messed up, hence their rep as a drug house; however, their mixer schedule isn't very good. Had a decent recent pledge class. Their parties are usually fairly run and are often raves, but sometimes have odd local bands playing instead of a DJ. Usually have fun o-week and slope day events.

Dke: A somewhat forgotten about house on West. Their house is extremely nice. Their brothers aren't the coolest, but like to have fun and are good guys. Pretty decent sorority relations, and throw fun open parties.

Zeta Psi: The first frat house at Cornell, located on North Campus across from Risley. Have a large house that is pretty nice, and with a big parking lot in the back. Their brothers are pretty nerdy, but like to party. Have somewhat decent open parties, but poor sorority relations. They also boast the largest TV in a fraternity house on campus.

Aepi: A nerdy Jewish frat on North Campus. Their house is fairly odd-looking and not in the best of locations. Their brothers are pretty nice but also nerdy and overall not that cool. Their sorority relations aren't good, and they don't party much.

Zbt: An apparently sketchy group of guys on North. Their house has a spectaular view, but is pretty dirty on the inside. While they're nationally Jewish, they don't have that many Jewish guys. Known to be pretty sketchy and awkward and smoke a lot, but with some cool brothers. They don't have very good sorority relations. Their 2012 pledge class wasn't very good, just like their 2011 one.

Phi Dry: A dry house on North Campus that is supposed to be dry, but drinks anyway. Their house is out of the way but very nice on the inside. They're somewhat nerdy, but some guys are pretty cool. Don't mix that often or throw many open parties. They had a decent 2012 pledge class.

Beta: A now-dry house on North with nerdy guys. Their house is way on North, but looks nice. They apparently have many gay brothers, but have some good guys in the house, albeit many nerds. There's very little social activity, such as parties or mixers, at Beta. Their recent pledge classes have been large, which is very good for their house. They appear to be rising.

Rockledge: An interesting, but nerdy, house that overlooks a gorge on West Campus. Their small house is fairly nice on the inside, but pretty cramped. Their basement gets hot during parties. Their brothers are nerdy and pretty diverse. Their sorority relations aren't very good, but they have some good open parties.

Kdr: A nerdy frat on North composed on mostly engineers. They have a pretty bad house on North that is both out of the way and not very nice. Their brothers are for the most part nice, but very nerdy guys. Don't mix very much, but have some open events.

Dtd: An odd house on West.. Their brotherhood is nerdy and barely large enough to be considered a frat. Terrible rep with sororities. Their pledge classes are always small. They have so few brothers they are hardly considered a fraternity; they rent out rooms to people as cheap housing.

Seal And Serpent: Only exist at Cornell, and are only known for a documentary Bob Saget filmed in it. Very, very nerdy house with extremely small pledge classes.

this was really well done! i would love to see a similar ranking for the sororities!

what do you think about the fraternity thats coming back- kappa sig

i agree, some info about the sororities would be great! thanks!

I really appreciate this! Can you please do one for sororities? I’m going to be a freshman next year and I think I want to rush.

@pigscanfly You have to be a soph to be in a frat/sorority

@ethano, that’s not true. You rush in the beginning of second semester during your freshman year.

This is actually very good and up to date

Most people would rank sororities in tiers. In years past people considered DG the single top sorority but I don’t think many people really believe that anymore. The tiers are generally considered to be these:

Top Tier or “Core 4”:
Delta Gamma (DG)
Kappa Alpha Theta (Theta)
Alpha Phi
Kappa Kappa Gamma (Kappa)

Middle Tier:
Sigma Delta Tau (SDT)
Pi Phi
Delta Delta Delta (Tri Delt)
Alpha Epsilon Phi (AEPhi)

Lower Tier:
Kappa Delta (KD)
Alpha Chi Omega (AChiO)
Phi Sigma Sigma (Phi Sig or Phi Sig Sig)
Alpha Xi Delta (AZD)

My thoughts:
some might contest that AEPhi is a cut below the other 3 middle tier and I would rank the lower tier distinctly in that order with a noticeable drop off from KD to AChiO and Phi Sig and AZD as clearly last. In general as you go down the list you get less looks and more personality. Also with sororities moreso than fraternities, in part because they are much larger, you can’t take these too strictly because you get a lot of outliers. Many girls are crushed each year when they get cut from “top tier” houses but they all end up loving their sorority and have a great time anyways.
