Cornell Guaranteed Transfer Accepted - Ask me Any Question Related to GT

hey, I'm a GT for Cornell who was recently accepted into ILR. For my first year, I went to the University of Miami to enjoy some sun before I head up to freezing Ithaca.

If you have any questions about the GT process / experience you may ask away!

Note: Specific questions relating to CALS GT or other GTs other than ILR - I might not be able to answer them.

Hi, wavebrk088--Thanks for posting, and congratulations on the successful GT! I'm the mom of a new GT for the class of 2011. I have a question for you--how did you handle the GT with your professors and friends at Miami? Did you tell them about it or go with the flow and not tell them? Did Miami help you get into your req'd courses for the GT, or did you have to kind of fight to get them? Overall, what was the attitude of the people at the university toward your GT, if they did know? I guess that's more than 1 question, but I'm curious! :) Welcome in advance to the Northeast! (It's a beautiful spring day here today, btw.).

Dr_Mom:

For my first semester professors, I didn't mention transferring at all, so of course I did not mention cornell.

But for my second semester professors, it was inevitable, since they are the ones who have to personally sign the midterm report. After that, I've actually gotten more smiles from them and the grades on my papers have actually shot up dramatically. However, there was one particular class where I did not participate as much. It seemed that after he heard about Cornell, he became really frustated at me during class since I didn't participate much (just wasnt interested.)

Miami has required Freshman courses, like freshman english, math, and foreign languages. But I told them that this was the specific route that I wanted to take, and my wish was to make up these required freshman courses in my sophomore year. I never told my counselor that I was transferring. My counselor of course felt a bit strange, but signed my course registration sheet nevertheless. (Hey, its not like they can tell you what to do. It's your tuition right? hahaha).

I didn't have to fight much to get my required courses, except for my economic class, where the guy on the phone lied to me about it being full. After a dozen phone calls through the department, they finally admitted that the economics class WASN'T full after all, but the reason they lied to me was because they wanted me to take the required freshman courses, which I decided to skip.

As for my friends...I didn't tell them until the second semester. A lot of them said they were really sad to see me leave, and that I'm "a retard to be transferring out..." Another group of friends started to alienate me. And then another group of friends, who are transferring out themselves, have suddenly been much more closer. Funny, how certain people react to such news huh?

I'm sure your son/daughter will do great! good luck!

if you have any more questions, let me know

lol damn those friends must not be worth it then. Don't worry we'll be havin a lot of fun at Cornell.

Just so ur story doesn't auto scare all GTs I'll tell mine 2 lol. I waited until a month into 2nd semester to tell my friends and it made them really sad (and me...I felt like an arse for not telling them to begin with) ...but I wouldn't take back waiting. I think it was the right decision. We r all back to normal now but just remember in the back of our minds that one of our friends and I won't be coming back. (I also think I influenced one of my friends to transfer...he told me I was one of the only things keeping him here so he literally called him mom to further his idea about transfering the night he found out about me (altho he does have good legit other reasons)). It all worked out in the end and we still hang out but sux to talk about it sometimes. It's now lighter conversation now since everyone has known about it for a few months...at first it was the conversation of auto-depression in the group lol.

Now everything's fine tho and back to normal. Telling friends sux but it's inevitable and WORTH IT. If u keep it from them too long that would be a horrrrrible decisionl. I thought my timing was pretty good...if I had waited longer it would be bad so just make sure u tell them b4 it's too late into the 2nd semester. If I had told them initially I feel like they wouldn't have become such good friends with me...and I still kinda think that. Why invest time in someone who is only staying for a year? That was my fear at least.

It all worked out in the end tho and was very worth it! (Although sometimes I still think about how fun next year would be if I stayed...but the word is FUN and that's not enough of a reason to turn down Cornell. I'll have fun there as well and make some great friends). GL gts!!! It's a GREAT opportunity and I STILL feel honored to have it. No regrets!

figgy, i am in the same situation

i made really good friends and i still dont know if im leaving because i have started to love them. is it worth leaving to go to cornell? i don't know... i don't know what cornell is really like or if i will enjoy it, the only factor is that it will be a lot cheaper than here at northwestern.

so, it boils down to ... stay at NU with great friends and an education equal to cornell's and feel guilty about my parents paying so much, or leaving, feeling depressed trying to readjust to a different school while my parents dont pay as much and i don't feel guilty.

The GT contract is non-binding right? We can cancel it anytime we want?
I plan to go to UCLA for a year and transfering to cornell. But, I'm worried that I won't receive enough financial aid for Cornell. If thats the case, I won't be able to attend Cornell and I'll have taken all the required courses for nothing. How was your guys' financial aid?

The contract is non-binding. Take some general requirements that will overlap with your major at UCLA.

Figgy already got his, so he could probably answer that.

I am still waiting on mine.

thanks for the quick response! and congrats on your GT success

How was your financial aid package (if any) affected by the GT.
Assumming all financial matters remaining the same, can one expect the same package for 1 or 2 year GT's?
I have often heard that most funds are spent for Freshmen and not for transfers.

I got a lot of money so don't worry about that. Like half of the entire costs of Cornell are pure grants for me. So don't worry about it!

wavebrk088--Thank you very much for your impressions of how this worked out for you! I'll be sure to share them with my son. And thanks for the encouragement, too! :) I'll pass that along as well.

I'm a Hotel GT, but I have a general GT question:

Do you think it would be possible to transfer for the spring '08 semester rather than the fall semester? I know that my agreement was for the fall, but I thought that maybe I could apply for transfer one semester early. I feel like the longer I spend away from Cornell, the harder it will be to adjust when I get there. So does anyone think applying a semester early would effect my GT, or if they'd even let me? Thanks!

re-applying would cancel your GT agreement.....you signed a paper that said you had to stay at another college for one full year...

you can check, but i doubt they'll let you.

i mean, if you have the right stats, im sure you can apply for the spring semester, but then you'd have to go through the entire transfer applicant process and that would also cancel your GT status, and you will not be guaranteed admission.

Just wondering… who do you contact for housing? I looked online but I wasn’t sure who’s in charge…thanks!

another question: I'm going to be attending a university running on the quarter system. To satisfy a semester-long cornell required course do i need to take 2 quarter courses?

wangdirty, i went to a quarter school as well for freshman year. cornell seems very lenient with what they will accept for transfer. for my quarter long classes they took them as entire semester courses. make sure you are communicating with cornell the entire year because it seemed like the more concern i showed for maintaining my required courses, the more they genuinely wanted to help me out.

(and they converted my A- 's to A's !!! i guess that's because of the A+/A thing at cornell but hey 4.0 is much nicer than 3.7 either way)

"(and they converted my A- 's to A's !!! i guess that's because of the A+/A thing at cornell but hey 4.0 is much nicer than 3.7 either way)"

...wat? Wat do u mean they converted them?

BlueDevil--Does this mean that you accepted the transfer? (I know you were/are tempted to stay at your current college). Just wondering! :)

WOW thanks BlueDevilBBall that makes planniing for my classes a LOT Easier!

Figgy, i had an A- in a class and the transfer credit thing showed that they assigned me an A. This is because perhaps they consider an A- at another school the second best thing i could have gotten because northwestern assignes A's as the best grade and not A+'s. so they gave me an A, because that was potentially the second best grade i could have gotten at cornell (as opposed to an A+). i dont think its necessarily right i just think thats what they think about it.

Dr. Mom, yes i decided to go. i'm gonna miss my friends here but financially it is the best decision for my family.

Wangdirty, no problem. Good luck with your year and see you at cornell soon!
