To distract a little from "how cold does it really get?" and "what are my chances?" and that terrible suicide thread, I'm starting a hockey thread.

Anybody gonig to Albany this weekend? I'll try to find a way to scalp the game online, I don't think I'll be able to make it up.

Cornell has really picked up its play in the last few weeks of the season, there were a few games in the middle that they just lacked cohesive play and couldn't string together back to back wins. B. Nash is playing better, he needs to stay out of the box for stupid penalties that he is so prone to do. R. Nash was so-so at the start, went out with an injury, then returned with a bang, his play really surprised me (nearly averaging 2 points per game upon his return). D'Agostino had a sensational freshman year with 18 points, consistent play, excellent D, and a mere 6 penalty minutes (compare that to B. Nash's 44!!). I think he'll wear the C one day.

USCHO's ECAC write is actually a legit writer. Here is his take on the Brown game:

I really, really like Brown. The Bears play with heart, they play all-out hockey, and I really hope that they're teaching opponents a thing or two about desire along the way. That said, in the interests of picking with my mind and not my heart, I have to go with Cornell. The Big Red are the dream-crushers, they play in games that end streaks and crush passion. They are the soul-devouring juggernauts of the league, because they are so systematically thorough in every aspect of the game that they will completely suck every ounce of energy out of your lineup. It's not a flaw or a criticism it's a very, very powerful attribute, and nobody does it like Cornell.

and his toughts on Cornell in this tournament and the next:
[quote]
And without further ado, the Cornell Big Red. Its only fitting that theyre the highest remaining seed, because even if Yale had made it through, the Red would still have been the true pedigree pooch of the lot.

Cornell was the last ECAC Hockey team to make the Frozen Four (2003). It has been the most successful team this decade, without much debate, and it represents generations of legendary Cornell hockey players every time it dons those classic jerseys.

But dont get them wrong; that aint Joe Nieuwendyk taking the draws, and its not David LeNeveu tending the twine. This is a self-made Big Red team, led by a self-made coach heck, Mike Schafer doesnt even have a secretary.

What this team does have in common with its predecessors is size, strength and smarts. Cornell will herd you into a corner, have some of its 6-foot-3 sentinels beat the tar out of you, then transition the puck up ice to Blake Gallagher, Colin Greening or Riley Nash (to name the usual suspects) for a really pretty goal. Its what they do.

That last bit though, about the scoring? Thats pretty new. Cornells always been known for its defense and goaltending, but this years team is adding a page to the Book of Red: scoring. The above-named trio combined for 44 goals in a 31-game season to date, which is also 44 percent of the teams offense (99 overall goals).

Ben Scrivens is, as a senior, exactly what Ben Scrivens was hoped to be as a senior: simply great. Hes got a .933 save rate and a 1.89 goals-against average, not to mention five shutouts and eight more one-goal games. In his last four outings, Big Red opponents have scored once, once, once, and none. Thats clutch keeping right there.

There is no question that the Red will also pack the house this weekend, bringing the leagues largest fan base to the Times-Union Center once more. If theres any part of this team that relies on its past, its the fans: Legions of Cornell students have swayed to Hail Cornell and jumped about to Give My Regards to Davy; its an inimitable facet of the Ithaca experience.

One team, one season, will never kill that kind of loyalty, nor can any one year elevate such devotion to something beyond but boy, one year can resonate for a long, long time in the hearts of those who care. The Big Red have a lot of those hearts, and the power to make them beat in unison.

:) Lets Go Red!!
