I just completed my first year at Binghamton Univ. but I look forward to putting in an app to Cornell for the spring term of 2007. Currently, I am a declared Economics major. Which school within Cornell is best for econ majors? I'm hoping that it's one of the state sponsored schools because of the lower tuition. Thanks.

CAS offers Econ and CALS offers Applied Economics and Management, which is just more business oriented. CALS is state-sponsored, but many transfer slots are automatically taken by guaranteed transfers. On another thread, it was reported that CAS accepted 8% of applicants this year = Harvard tough. Good luck.

that's a little exaggerated, b/c Harvard Applicants on avg>Cornell Applicants on avg

dang... you arent kidding either about CAS, i just checked out that thread. Are there stats currently on CALS? Like i said, I would much rather apply to the state schools.

Newby - true Harvard applicants will generally be stronger than Cornell, but I doubt the differences are substantial.

brand_182-Agreed

icedgreen88 - there is specific info for CALS
you can view the info on this page: http://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000156.pdf

for CALS, there were 499 transfer applicants last year and 254 were accepted, but like other people mentioned that data is really skewed because of GTs

iced green, to make your chances better and higher, i would recommend you apply in the fall. For this spring, they only have 10 spots available and about 300-400 apply; i know this because they came to my CC

I wonder how much influence the GTs have on the CALS admissions pool.

ilovecollegelife

OMG I really wish I had seen that earlier! That is the most helpful information I've seen on Cornell ever. Even if GTs take a lot of spots, the overall acceptance rate into CALS is 50%. That's really high and I bet even after the GTs are given their slots, there are many more external transfer acceptances than there are for CAS. Man...now I'm gonna have to go change my schedule from Physics to Biology!

this is only a guess, but i would estimate that 100 or so of those 499 transfer applicants are GTs

that brings CALS transfer acceptance rate from 50% at first glance to around 38% (after factoring out GTs)

wth? brand, what is your major anyways? you shouldnt change your major just for a school's prestige!

mojojo - Economics is my major...Applied Economics and Management is very similar but more business oriented, so I see no problem with doing that as my major. I'm still getting what I want. And I wouldn't change my major just for a school's prestige...what are you talkin a/b? Every school offers Economics.

On a side note, and probably the best news any Cornell hopeful could EVER want to hear, I just got off the phone with a lady at the CALS Admissions desk who informed me of this:

****At the bottom of the link provided by ilovecollege it states that "special students are not included." That specifically refers to guaranteed transfers. In other words, those transfer statistics are the real deal. No inflation...she said she wanted to be sure to get that across to me and that CALS was extremely transfer friendly at 50%! compared to CAS at 7%. I will definitely be applying to the AEM major like I intended.

oh, thats good then!

btw brand, what majors are offered in cals? just curious..

Yeah I'm freakin stoked now.

CALS offers a lot of science stuff - here's a list:
http://www.cals.cornell.edu/cals/prospective/admissions/academic-programs/index.cfm

But unfortunately for me still, I believe AEM is the most competitive major to transfer into. I'm happy either way though now. Cornell was my first love (though not my favorite anymore) so I never really wanted to drop it from the list.

oh wut!! cals has my major, thats weird!

Dude apply! I can't believe CALS is so incredibly transfer friendly but with that confirmation from the lady at the admissions office I'm definitely going for it...what's your major?

my major is communications, but if it isnt offer, then i say its sociology, since they are relatively the same. I looked @ the admissions website and i cant apply cuz i havent taken the 2 bios yet ha!

lol yeah WTH right? I am set up to take Physics I and II this year b/c I figured that's the most impressive science, but now I'll have to switch to Bio (which I consider easier)...hey whatever makes them happy. Easier courseload for me.
