posting for a friend who is thinking of coming in as a grad student, so hes older and wants something more comfortable ideally luxuriosu where he could be walking distance to campus, but also have privacy of a really nice place. I have no idea how to find something in ithaca. Anyone suggest a place?

I am not sure if you are referring to on campus or off campus housing. If it is off campus housing, the nicest apartments are in Collegetown, which is walking distance to the campus. Just google it, or go to Cornell’s off campus housing website and you should see a list of apartments which are still available. My daughter lived at 312 College Ave. She really enjoyed it. It had doorman, state of the art laundry room (texts you when the wash is done), and the apartments were nice and big. Apartments in the building are very expensive and they require one year lease. My daughter was able to get her apartment at a very much discounted price through subletting. A lot of students go study abroad for a semester (or a year) and they sublet their apartments when they are away.

They were very helpful to us.

I am a grad student as well going to Cornell next year and I found Collegtown to be the most interesting. It might be worthwhile to look at Craigslists to join an apartment/house with some other mature grad students. I personally value having this “home” feeling over being alone in your luxurious apartment. You just have to find the right roommates.

the 407 college ave apartments are really nice

I think the issue with collegetown is the noise level. I’d imagine it gets loud and a lot of partying going on. I think the suitable situation is something very comfortable, nice, easy walking access to campus, yet also relatively private and not having to hear drunk kids outside your window so that you can actually study

any options?

also anyone know of any organic grocery options near cornell, walking distance?

I think a lot of those apartment buildings have sound proof windows. You couldn’t hear anything from my kid’s apartment.

Look into the maplewood or fairview apartments or houses on dryden past linden. You can find the latter pretty easily on craiglist.

Also, there are no organic grocery stores in ctown; you’ll have to go to wegmans for that. There might be a Greenstar opening up in late 2013 though… see http://cornellsun.com/node/49315
