What entices me about the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University? Well, the college offers an education that puts emphasis on the diverse perspectives and multitude of disciplines that are fundamental in the study of health. Having this broad education, and learning from differing perspectives will facilitate a more complete understanding and a greater appreciation of the field of health and medicine, a field I became interested in at a young age. I was first drawn to the field of medicine when I was informed that I was in need of braces in my early teenage years. Watching my doctor meticulously examine my x-ray and determine what was to be done in order to correct my absurd bite was extremely intriguing to me. My jaw was abnormal and my teeth were far from straight. As a result, I found that I spent a great deal of time at the orthodontist. As the years went by I was captivated at how the precise placement of metal on my teeth could slowly change something so grotesque to something so perfect and beautiful. I was not only fascinated with teeth, but also found interest in all aspects of medicine and human health. I envisioned my self in the doctors chair looking at my own patients, and making difficult decisions to help solve their problems. The College of Human Ecology at Cornell University is where I can study to fulfill this dream.

As I began my inquiry into the majors amidst the College of Human Ecology I arrived at the Human Biology, Health, and Society major and was quickly absorbed. I have no doubt that the Human Biology, Health, and Society program is ideal for me to extend my interest in health issues. At the same time, this undergraduate program will foster my enthusiasm to examine health issues from a social science perspective. The flexibility of this major will be lenient as I decide what specific medical path I will choose to follow. As I read through the description of this major I was surprised at how perfectly it fit my interests.I am eager to integrate human biology with aspects of psychology, physics, nutrition, and other applicable courses.

I am interested in many aspects of medicine and health sciences and the Human Biology, Health, and Society major, due to its interdisciplinary nature will enable me to delve into all possible health professions while building a strong foundation with introductory courses. I currently aspire to attend medical school after my undergraduate studies. While studying under this major I will receive a pre-medical educations while learning about the areas of medicine that are overlooked, such as the social aspects of health. Overall, this will grant me an upper hand when solving health problems by improving nutrition and health of patients.

Throughout high school I have made it my own personal goal to devote a great deal of my time to philanthropy. I have volunteered at homeless shelters and annual church mission trips. I searched to fine a program at Cornell University that would allow me to continue to give back throughout my collegiate years. I was delighted to fine the Urban Semester Program that provides and opportunity to have hands-on experience, and helping those who are vulnerable.
