Cornell HumanEc chances

Chance me for Cornell’s College of Human Ecology - Health Care Policy Major - EARLY DECISION CLASS OF 2026

Some precursors: I am an Asian American female from Northern New Jersey at a very competitive high school. I had an eating disorder as a freshman and my grades really suffered as a result, but I improved a lot. My school reports weighted only, not unweighted.

SAT: 1520 770 R/ 750 M (TAKING IT AGAIN FOR HIGHER MATH FINGERS CROSSED)
Freshman: 3.16 - regular classes

Sophomore: 3.94 - Honors biomedical technology honors, regular classes besides that

Junior: 4.82 - AP LANG AND COMP, AP PHYSICS 1, AP WORLD HISTORY, AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, HONORS ORCHESTRA, regular ALGEBRA 2

Senior - AP PSYCHOLOGY, AP LITERATURE, AP PHYSICS 2, AP MUSIC THEORY, HONORS ORCHESTRA, HONORS PRECALCULUS

senior year I’m taking some classes at a community college - Cross Cultural Healthcare, Intro to Politics, and Calculus 1 (I made the mistake of not doing accelerated math at school so I have to take calculus at a college instead of at school)

ECS

  • Future Doctors of America - 3 years - fundraising officer in junior year, president senior year
  • varsity debate - 4 years
  • school orchestra 4 years (violin/ viola)
  • The College of New Jersey orchestra - a month in sophomore year
  • might be in some orchestra chamber groups in New York for viola, but not sure
  • 50+ volunteer hours at a church for week long vacation bible school - helped set up, crafts with 100+ kids, and babysat
  • very cheap SAT tutoring or free SAT tutoring for underprivileged students

Honors: AP Scholar, honor roll
I want to make my supplemental essay about healthcare equity and the intersection between medicine and the law that Cornell provides

Thanks so much for any help

Would an internship with a healthcare lawyer help getting in?

We are not AOs but amateurs. But I would say little chance. The rigor was little b4 Junior year and you will be competing against many others that have superior records. That said, perhaps you’ll get deferred.

If it’s your dream school, I don’t see an issue going for it - as long as you have targets and safeties to fall back on.

On your essay, talk about you - not the program - meaning tie your accomplishments, desires to the topic. Don’t define the school. It’s always to learn about you.

Good luck.

A few questions:

Are you the mom posting on behalf of your child? I can respect the desire for anonymity but I can see a disaster in the making if you write up the application on behalf of your daughter.

It sounds like your daughter is interested in pre-med? Is that the case? If so the HumEc people sometimes have a chip on their shoulders for students who use this as a back door at Cornell.

Cornell is a stressful place. Are you sure that you want her to attend a place that can making her eating disorder worse? Cornell is known for grade deflation, plus a competitive atmosphere. You might be better off going to a less prestigious college where she can shine and be at the top of her class.

We need to see your unweighted GPA and estimated class rank for meaningful chances. Since each HS does weighting differently, they focus more on the unweighted GPA.

How much financial aid will she need?

What does the naviance scatterplots look like from her high school to Cornell?
