Cornell ILR Early Decision!!

Hello all! This is my first CC post, not really sure how this works but decided to give it a shot.

I am a current high school junior and have recently looked into Cornell’s ILR program and FELL IN LOVE. It is absolutely perfect for me and what I am looking for in a college. Here are some details about me, it would be nice if some of you guys with some background on the school could let me know if I have a chance.

Female, Asian (Pakistani Muslim), first-generation college student (born in US, parents are immigrants from Pakistan), fluent in Urdu/Hindi, Punjabi, live in Upstate NY, and attend one of the best public high schools in the nation. It has a reputation in accepting several Cornell applicants a year, 6 this year and 8 a couple years ago.

ACT: 31 - Math: 32, English: 31, Reading: 32, Science: 30

AP Classes (Test score): Comparative Government and Politics (5), English Language and Composition (4), English Literature and Composition (5), Environmental Science (5), European History (3), Macroeconomics (4), Microeconomics (4), Psychology (5), U.S. Government (5), U.S. History (4)

Extracurriculars: Student Government all four years (Treasurer, Secretary, President, President!), Interact Club (community service work), School Yearbook (Vice President), Prom Committee (President), Homecoming Committee (President), Debate Team, Diversity Club

Out-of-school activities: Muslim Youth Group (President), Tutor at elementary school, part of BLifeNY organization (organ donations), member of “Autism Speaks” organization

Jobs/Internships: Internship at Cellino & Barnes, Sunday School teacher

Honors/Awards: Business Honor Society, National Merit Scholar, National Honor Society

I want to go to law school after undergrad and absolutely love learning about social sciences and everything ILR offers. My math and science classes are not the most challenging, but my passion in English and social studies is reflected through the AP classes I’m taking. My school offers 2 English APs and 5 Social Studies APs and I will have taken all 7 of them by the time I graduate.

My school does not tell students their high school rank or GPA on a 4.0 scale, but my normal average is 94.51, probably will go up to around a 95 by the time I apply to schools. And from looking at College Board’s website, they say anything above 94 is a 4.0?

Overall, Cornell ILR is my DREAM school and I really hope admissions officers recognize that. I’m confident my essays and recommendations will be great. I know I may not have a huge amount of work/internship experience, but I have focused this year and am planning to focus next year mostly on Student Government, which is by far the extracurricular I am most passionate about. Hopefully being Senior Class President stands out?

Thank you for any input you can give me!

Definitely raise ur ACT but everything else looks on point!

Yup - taking it again this June and probably once more in September. I read somewhere that ILR’s average ACT is 29-31, but still hoping to bump it up.

ILR, like many of the schools at Cornell, looks for fit. Student government should help, but what else makes you a good fit for the college? You definitely have to demonstrate a lot of passion in your essays.

I’m planning on doing Model UN and DECA (a business club) senior year? Would that make me a better “fit”? Also, I will be visiting Pakistan for 2 weeks this July to do volunteer work with this organization that focuses on women empowerment and their place in society (for example, at the workplace). I think that piece of summer work may show that I’m interested in labor relations and how it relates to women. I’m pretty sure ILR has a class or some type of club relating to the subject, so

Definitely planning on pulling all the strings regarding my essays to show how passionate I am about this school. Planning on including specific classes and curriculum the school has and why ILR would be perfect for what I want to do.

Those all sound good! I think those will show your passion.

Bump bump

Bumping twice a day is frowned upon.

Those who’ve posted here already said pretty much all there is to say. Leave it at that. And, ultimately, the only person who knows what your chances are is the admissions officer reading your application. The rest is just a shot in the dark.
