cornell ILR inteview issue+chances

I applied RD to Cornell ILR, and I recently got a call from an ILR alum asking to interview with me. Unfortunately my cell phone's been having issues, so I got the message a week later. I called as soon as I got the message but my interviewer's message inbox was full so I couldn't leave a message. My interviewer has not gotten back to me, and I'm worried that this will hurt my chances for ILR since I didn't respond sooner. However, I also read that ILR has a policy of NOT allowing freshman interviews which seems strange. I e-mailed my regional rep to see if I could get in contact with my interviewer another way (I put e-mail as my preferred method of communication and rarely listed my cell phone number since it's had issues lately) before the interview process ends, but she hasn't yet gotten back to me.

Will the fact that I did not get back to my interviewer earlier hurt me? Most interviewers contacted me by e-mail, and I don't remember putting my cell phone number down for contact.

Sorry to make this post long...but I'm pretty nervous about my chances at ILR. It's my top choice, but I've had a couple tough classes this year that have given me some lower grades. I have been a straight A student throughout all of high school, but this year my AP BC Calc and Spanish grades may be B+s.
Here are my stats:
GPA: 94.5 SAT I cr.m.w: 700.770.800 ACT:33 (e.m.r.s: 34.35.32.32)
SAT II mathii/us/bio: 760/730/730

Senior Year 1st Semester Grades: AP Gov (94), AP Lit (96), AP Calc BC (86), AP Spanish (89), Physics Honors (not sure yet),
Business Law (98), Human Anatomy (97), Wind Ensemble/Gym (98)

APs taken: AP Bio (5), AP Lang (5), AP US (5), AP Euro (5),
AP Micro/macro econ (4s)

Relevant ECs: DECA Regional President, Varsity Tennis Captain, Model UN Chairperson, Mock Trial Team Captain, Internship at US Senator's Office, Internship at Family Law Office

^ it doesn’t’ really matter and yes, that does sound fishy. Email the Cornell undergrad admissions board directly to confirm and ask questions, that’s your best bet.

it does matter - sort of…try the alum contact again - apologize once for the delay in replying - and then move to…do not over apologize but DON"T just ignore it!
Don’t call the school - they are busy processing applications - do you want to slow that down? NO!!!

The Alum Information meeting is not an interview - as has been stated on this formum many many many many times - but it is rude to ignore the Alum - who may rely tot cornell that you did not return any calls - and that MIGHT show a lack of interest on your part.

oh just to be clear sorry…once I finally received the message I CALLED MY INTERVIEWER TWICE. Each time it said that her voicemail box was full, and that I couldn’t leave a message. I also e-mailed my regional rep and asked. Neither have returned my call/emails yet.

According to my message service the call came in on the 19th, and it popped up on my phone on the 28th. I would never get back that late, so I freaked out and called her back as soon as I got it. Do you think she already notified Cornell that I didn’t respond? It’s my top choice school, and I would hate it if my phone issues hurt my chances. I’ll e-mail the school right now.

Chancing: Looks pretty good, as long as your grades/class ranking is as healthy as your other statistics. Why did you not ED if it’s your first choice?

even if the assigned alum filed the report noting that you did not return the call, he/she can file a corrected report…

@antiflamer…I wasn’t completely sure about Cornell ILR early on in the process, but after visiting and attending an open house later it became my top choice. You don’t think my 86 in AP Calc will be a major detriment?

@memphis mom…I just sent an e-mail to ILR admissions and general admissions. Do you think my interviewer would send back a report saying I did not respond? I hope not. Also does Cornell even give interviews, because according to it’s site it doesn’t. I feel like I’m missing something here.

they are not interviews - they are information meetings…

If your grades have been solid so far (solid in upper regions of top 10% of class), not many Bs, a singular B in senior year won’t hurt you much at all. Grades are expected to slip a little in senior year for various reasons / trends over past few years, and imo it’s not really something that colleges fret about or care very much despite how some people may say otherwise. An 86 in AP calc would not be a “major detriment”. Dropping out of school would be though.

thanks for all the responses…
I followed people’s advice and sent e-mails and eventually my interviewer got back to me so I can still have my interview. And I understand that this is more of an information session than an interview, because Cornell doesn’t give official “interviews” to prospective freshman.

Hey runi27, I was in a very similar position during the ED round. I got the message about an alum interview on my phone a month late. By the time I had received the message, admissions decision for the Early Decision round were a week away. Now, we both realized that the interview could not be done in time to ensure that the admissions committee received it before decisions were released. I set up the meeting for after the December 9th (when the decisions were released) and we decided that the meeting was only necessary if I was deferred. Well, it turned out that I was accepted despite completely missing my alumni interview. So, in the greater scheme of things, it is obvious that the interviews do not matter. haha, hope that helps relieve some of your anxiety.

Hey! I saw that you’re a DECA State Officer and felt compelled to reply.

I’m a DECA State President and have also applied RD to Cornell’s ILR school. Best of luck to you!

Thanks for all the responses on this thread. I was able to get into contact with ILR, and eventually get in touch with my interviewer. The interview was great, and more like a Q+A session (as some of you posted) than an interview really. Thanks again for the responses, I’m glad this was resolved. If anyone else wants to chance or give any opinions please do.

@jmart93 thanks for the shout out and good luck to you too! Just to clarify, I’m a regional (not state) officer. kudos to you though…state officer is impressive :)

So…I’ve been reading some posts and apparently a bunch of kids have already gotten their acceptance letters for ILR. Some people are saying it’s based on how early you turned in your app (since it’s rolling admission) but I turned in my app before some of the kids who posted their acceptances did. Also others claim they only send early acceptances to stronger applicants. Is this a bad indication? I’m really worried since ILR is my top choice.

Applications are not read in the order they are submitted. It’s not first in, first out. So don’t read anything into it if you got your application in early and haven’t heard. Only a small portion of those admitted receive this notification.
