MY BIG THING- I did computer science summer research at polytech university last summer and am entered into the siemens-westinghouse competition, ill update here if i win october 20th.

Essays- mediocrity, Teacher recs-Amazing

If you do well in Siemens-Westinghouse, sure. Even without that, I would vote yes. Your SATs aren't great, but are all right. Same with GPA. But I would say yes due to your amazing record in AP scores. To me, that really predicts college success. Of course, I'm not on the admissions committee. Try to make your essays better than mediocre. The essay is more about you than about writing ability. Use it to enhance the school's interest in YOU. If you don't make it for ED, and do well with that schedule, you should have a good chance RD. But somehow, I think that you will get the ED.

you CANT take 5 IB tests at Higher Level...it is either 3 or 4, meaning you will be dropping one of your subjects to Standard Level.

and how can you take the APs at the same time of the IBs,,?

You gotta shot. What I will add is that a know a # of kids who got deferred in the ED round at Cornell. They were later accepted through the RD process. So in the event you do not get in ED, do not get too disheartened as Cornell really does re-evaluate the "ED pool" and does accept a bunch of the ED kids during the regular admission process. Good luck.

"you CANT take 5 IB tests at Higher Level...it is either 3 or 4, meaning you will be dropping one of your subjects to Standard Level.

and how can you take the APs at the same time of the IBs,,?"

Untrue. He took 1 SL course last year and is taking 2 SL and 5 HL courses this year. That's a combined total of 5 HL and 3 SL -- as long as his classes are in the correct subjects (which I'm sure they are) he is definitely a diploma candidate.

Also, AP (unlike IB) lets you take their exams without taking the class. The OP most likely just self-studied for the AP classes (combined with the knowledge he was gaining from his IB classes) and obtained the scores that way.

I think you're looking pretty good, OP. You've gone above and beyond the IB curriculum and you have qualifying scores. Not a shoe in, but you've got a decent chance -- try to get the best grades you can this semester (I would say your GPA, relative to your classmates, rank is the worst part of your academic section of your application).

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

Yeah um for the diploma i have the sl of psychology and spanish plus 4 hls (math, physics, english, history)

Then in addition to the diploma i am taking the ib courues tests in hl comp sci and sl economics in order to get ceperate ib certificates not included in the diploma

And yes most of the aps are self studies that sorta went along with the ib curriculms

Yeah my gpa sucks alot, im just at the brim of the top 10% there are so many people ahead of me(not to be rude or nasty or vein, but its true) that simply arent smarter then iam but have better grades. I really screwed up my freshman year, i have mid 70's in spanish, but otherthen that my calc and physics average are 100. And i wrote my essay about striving for self improvment

any other thoughts?

winning the siemens competition is virtually impossible, unless youre idea is pure genius. Kid at my school IS a genius (part of 1st group of kids to perfect score new SAT) and only got 2nd place. Good luck in trying to win that crap, if you do you have admittance into the college of your choice. Even if you place in the top16 you have the college of your choice. Your topic better be some thing no regular person knows about like Macrocyclization Using Ring-Closing Olefin Metathesis: Synthesis of a 13-Member Dithiolactone.

I give you about a 60% chance at acceptance at Cornell ED.

Positive: IBs, lots of APs, toughest courses, Siemens and other competitions, great SATs, teacher recommendations

Negatives: Barely top 10% at school, essays

P.S. Like firewolf said--don't worry about winning Siemens. Any high placing will get you into most any college--including Cornell. And work on those essays if you know they are only mediocre. Get suggestions for improvements from your teachers or other top students you know.

"if i win october 20th"
Yeah i guess that was a little confusing, october 20th they announce semi-finalists, i dont honestly think i have a chance at winning it all... when i refer to winning im just hoping for the semis, also does it matter that im doing a 2 person team and not individual? my partner is not applying to cornell

i say about 80% ure in. i am assuming u go to a super competitive school? however, if you're in New York or New Jersey, I give you about a 50% chance.

my school is not competitive at all, i just really sucked up spanish and my whole freshman year, and some english and hostory courses along the way

I am a new york resident, im male and im white, does that really hurt my chances?

^^^if ur school is not that competitive, then you're rank/gpa might hurt u a bit. also, if ure applying engineering or sciences, i think u will be fine although ur spanish grades r low (as long as they're not C's or D's, or god forbid, F's). yep being a NY resident will hurt ur chances. but i still think u will get in ED to Cornell.

dident win siemens, and now our class rank number 2 applied early decsion to engeer. Hes got amazing stats, beter everything plus he does varsity sports and winds big. factoring this in how are my chances?
