Can someone please tell me what they think? I applied to Cornell ED for Engineering with a Computer Science interest. Michigan Engineering Comp Sci and GT CS.
-White Male, Out of State for all, but feeder school for Michigan and both GT and Cornell have accepted students from my school each of the past few years so they’re familiar with my school which is a nationally recognized public high school
-Cornell legacy
-GPA UW 3.96 W 4.72 no rank school, if ranked I am no worse than top 10 and probably top 5 out of more than 400 students
- Took most rigorous courses offered to me
- AP scholar w/distinction (all 5’s on AP Exams)
- Taking 4 more AP’s this year
- 2 DE
- Have received numerous honors/awards in math and computer science
- Spanish Honor Society and National Honor Society
- Competed in individual and group math competition and computer science group competitions through school
- Academic Bowl member and captain
- Play a 4 year sport
- Volunteer tutor
- Create websites for free for businesses who can’t afford it with friends
- LOR’s all solid, haven’t seen them but have had these teachers for multiple years
- Essays I feel are solid with hooks and from people who have seen them I have received positive feedback
PM me for more info as others from my school are applying and I do not want to give myself away. Thank you.
Take a deep breath- and then go do something else with your anxiety. It’s hard to wait, but you know that you are a credible applicant and you have done what you can. Stewing about it - and creating chance threads- is like poking a sore tooth: it’s still sore!
So: do something really physical (best way to get the stress hormones out of your system) and do something for somebody else (best way to get out of your own head and remind yourself that we all have anxieties and we all need each other). Together they will shift your focus, make the time seem to go faster, and help you body & soul.
Good luck, and come back and tell us how it goes!

Thank you. I have some other schools have also applied Early Action but if I am not accepted into Cornell I will not hear back from anywhere until the end of January so am trying to decide if I should start applying to more schools.
This year it is probably not good to be a while male going into Computer Science.
Don’t even start with that. You and tens of thousands of other very qualified students are applying to top tier schools for a few thousand places. At NONE of them are white males in the minority. At Michigan just 28% of engineering students are female and 14% POC. Georgia Tech is 60:40 M:F and 50% white, 25% asian, 10% hispanic and 8% black. Cornell is 50:50 M:F and roughly 33% white, 28% mulit/mixed, 25% asian, 10% hispanic and 3% black.
These schools are so over-blessed with qualified candidate that nobody who is admitted is less than well-qualified.
All that said, it is going to be an extra-tough admission year, because of all the various covid factors.

Yep, everyone said this was our year but doesn’t look like for a lot of excellent applicants who may have put all their eggs in one basket. It would have been much easier if not so many schools pushed their notification dates to after new year, otherwise by now I would have at least had some options.
I also submitted my score so I hope that is meaningful. My point with the white male is that while yes a place like Cornell is 50/50 M/F (actually more female to male in engineering) there are less female applicants overall applying so they have a greater shot. There are fewer good quality URM, POC, hispanic, applicants, etc applying, but there are more white male applicants than anything else applying and most are great applicants so many applying for so few spots.
Because of quota in their other colleges, fortunately I am not applying, they will take lesser candidates than more qualified ones. Hard year for any senior no matter where they want to go. Only a few more days before this headache is over or continues.
Were you able to take any tests like Act /Sat? Also what is the highest math your taking now? Did you take physics c?
All are reaches for everyone. Have back up schools. Having a history of being a feeder is your positive in this. Can’t go wrong with any of them but I am biased with Michigan since my son is graduating in engineering this year.
Hello, yes I am taking Calculus 3 now and earning an A as well as AP Physics C also earning an A. Next semester I will be taking Linear Algebra and the other semester of AP Physics C. I am also currently taking AP Chemistry. I do have an ACT score I submitted. Perfect 36 math, composite 35.
Nice. So your a strong candidate. Still have some safeties that you can afford and be happy to go to. Good Luck.
As a computer professional, I can tell you with 100% certainty that the prestige will make zero difference. CS is a ridiculously employable degree. And 99.99% of what you learn in computers will be on the job anyway. In about 3 years, employers won’t even ask where you went to school. Take a deep breath, apply for a school you can afford, and go there.
Also, uncertainty seems to be the new normal. If you can afford an expensive school now, that might not be true in 4 years. I recommend going somewhere in-state. If something happens, you could finish your degree with student loans.
I’m a current Ga tech student in Biomedical Engineering. Knowing the computer science program here, you’ll definitely get into Georgia Tech. No sweat.
