Cornell Mid-Year report worries

OK, so I'm going to (presumably) get my professors to fill this out after midterms.

My grades last semester were all A's, but this semester they will probably be in the A- range (for the midterm) and up to an A by the final. I tend to increase my grades dramatically once I'm familiar with the grading process.

In particular, though, there's one class (College Algebra) that I have a terrible grade in, and this is mostly due to my background in math more than anything else. The subsection score for math on the SAT (570, compared to CR660 and W770) reflects this. When I say "terrible" I mean "if I get 100 on the midterm it might be a C and I hope to B+ or A- this by the end of the year."

Does this absolutely destroy my chances of getting in as a transfer? I'm currently a freshman applying for the fall 2008 semester.

Here's my information:

--College--
College GPA (1st semester): 4.0
ECs: Founded a club for a constructed/artificial language, work for a Scandinavian video game company
SAT: 2000 (Nov. 2007 retake), Math 570 Critical Reading 660 Writing 770

--High school--
High school GPA: 3.75 (or so)
ECs: Debate
SAT: 1700 (Jan 2007), Math 450 Critical Reading 570 Writing 670

Major: Philosophy (considering possible double major with Political Science)
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male

Part of it depends on what college you are applying to and what major. If it is in a pre-req course than that would make the grade stand out I would think.

Sorry, it's Philosophy. I've edited that in.

Does that mean that you are currently failing the course?

Since math is not really related to your major, it should lessen the impact. But having a C on the report would be pretty bad. If you could somehow raise it to the B level, it would help a lot.

I mean that fact that you need a 100 to get a C.

I'm not sure. The teacher doesn't really keep grades. I know that it's really, really low, though. Embarrassingly low. Probably in the 60-70 range.

By the midterm I should be able to make this into a C or so, but I doubt I could get it up to a B without more exam grades. The prof tends to inconsistently switch around what she assigns for homework, so I've bombed quite a few otherwise easy and doable homework assignments just by not knowing I was supposed to do until it's too late.

I realize this is pretty much unheard of on College Confidential, so realize that this is only for this course and every other course should be in the A range. Please refrain from "OO;" reactions. >__>

Honestly, since you're applying with only a semester's worth of grades, a midyear with a C could really hurt you, especially if there is no extenuating circumstance. Try your best to get the grade up, maybe the adcoms will see that it is an exception on your transcript and will not consider it as much.

"Embarrassingly low. Probably in the 60-70 range"

Since when is a 70 Embarrassingly low for a class that has nothing to do with your major? Don't sweat it so much, and i'm sure you'll pull out a good grade in the end. Hell if the admissions at the school you want to go doesn't realize that, prolly not the type of place you want to go.
