Question for current students - How nice are the practice rooms at Cornell? The website says they are in the basement - wondering if it's a dungeon or not. Also the hours restrictions (12 per week) and the fact that you have to pay $100/semester to use them seem to indicate that there are not enough of them. Also, are they readily available to non-music majors in the College of Arts and Sciences? Son is a pianist and is intrigued by the grand pianos.

I’ll chime with a variation: My daughter is considering Cornell, in Engineering. Can non-CAS students use the rooms at all, if anyone is aware ?

I just visited Cornell and I checked out the music facilities. Yes, the practice rooms are in the lower floor. However, it’s nothing like a dungeon. There are plenty of rooms, some with pianos, some without, with padding on the walls for the acoustics. The rooms were all locked and I didn’t work up the courage to disturb someone who was practicing, but I could see into the rooms by the door window. I stopped by on a Tuesday afternoon, so there weren’t a lot of people practicing but I can’t see the place being packed enough that every room is filled. I asked, and the rooms are open to anyone in the Cornell community, provided you pay the fee.

You could also consider applying to live in Risley or JAM. There are practice rooms in both. Not sure if it’s just one piano room in Risley or more. I’d have to ask (or you could inquire). JAM has multiple pianos. My son loves Risley. He’ll live there next year for his third year.

All West Campus houses (upperclass housing) have music rooms with pianos; I’m not sure about North, but Dickson had a piano in one of the common rooms.

Risley has let’s see… I believe 5 pianos in it as of now. Though 2 of them are not in the best of shape right now.
I live in Risley and love it and will be living there again next year.

Also I thought there would be no engineers in here (one of my concerns since I am an engineer) but there were plenty to be found! I’ve met people from every college here in Risley.
