I plan on going into Pre-Med and both colleges have great science programs. I have a much better chance of getting into Brandeis, but if I apply ED to Cornell, I have a solid chance of getting in. Where would you guys rather attend? How do the education, social life, girls, and overall atmosphere compare in both schools. These two schools are my top 2 options so any comments would greatly be appreciated.

anyone? if there is a better forum to post it on, then please tell me.

Cornell is superior in probably every way possible, from the lifestyle to the campus to the education. The risk is it might be harder to get a great GPA, but if you are confident in your ability to get a good GPA its the better option. These schools are not peers, Cornell is better.

Cornell. Easy choice.

Personally I’d pick Brandeis, but I a) have an irrational hatred of Cornell, b) am not a fan of rural schools (Ithaca is an hour+ away from freaking Syracuse), and c) like schools with 2-5,000 students.

so being an ivy, it must be better right? And better at everything too, right? Can’t wait till I get to interview some of you guys for job positions with that infallible logic. Hopefully you’re not in wharton (I doubt it) and have to face me for a finance position soon. Let’s see…proximity to boston or being in nowhere ithaca. Turned down Cornell 3 times in my lifetime (for a bachelor’s, master’s/phd, and post-doc (didn’t even apply for this one!)). Would do again!

Disliking Cornell or its location does not make Brandeis a comparable school. Also, while you dislike Ithaca, others like it. Also, Brandeis may be close to Boston, but Waltham is a hole. It’s not like Brandeis is in Newton or Chestnutt Hill or some other nice part of Boston.

disliking Cornell for it’s location solely is as rational as liking it for its ivy status and its supposed superiority (where do you posters even come up with this stuff? Did you actually research this before spouting it?) over Brandeis for EVERYTHING.

Waltham is suburbia. It’s boring, but not a ****hole as you randomly assume.

Between these two, another vote for Cornell. I like Brandeis, bit it isn’t Cornell’s peer. And while Waltham may be near Boston, it sure doesn’t FEEL like it to me.

Cornell by a mile and a half.

Another word about Brandeis. I really do like Brandeis; I think it has a lot of positives. But one drawback of Brandeis is that, probably because it’s a comparatively young university, its name doesn’t travel particularly well.

Many people in the northeast have heard of Brandeis; many highly educated people all over the country have heard of Brandeis; many Jews have heard of Brandeis (yes, I know, it’s not actually a Jewish university, but still…). But if you went to Fresno or Tallahassee or Colorado Springs and did man-on-the-street interviews, I’m quite sure you’d find more people who are familiar with Cornell than who are familiar with Brandeis. Of course, Harvard and Yale would have far better name recognition than Cornell (and so would anyplace with big-time football or men’s basketball), but I still think Cornell would beat out Brandeis by a country mile.

I don’t think anyone considers Cornell and Brandeis peers. It may be considered a peer of something like a Boston College or a WUSTL, but not Cornell.

Thank you for all the replies. I know Cornell is clearly the better school, but I’m wondering what school has a better environment overall. I’m not only looking for education, which Cornell clearly wins in, but also the social scene, night life, where I would enjoy myself more while having a great education. Any insight on that?

Ithaca >>> Waltham

And no, don’t expect to be in Boston as much as many posters are going to say. Brandeis is inconveniently placed to commute into the city for a college student. It’s not like Tufts that is actually on the T.

Forgetting the clear difference in reputation and quality of education, Cornell is also much more fun. Brandeis is known for having a somewhat boring/ average quality of life.

You’ve never been to Waltham, have you?

Cornell, obviously

I think you should apply to Brandies because my kid will most likely apply to Cornell, following her sister’s footstep. One less competition for my younger kid.

My nephew just started at Cornell. It is their orientation week. Last night he went to 3 parties. Fraternities are having their parties in Collegetown. He lived in HKG for over 10 years. He said it was like LAN Kwai Fung (a street in HKG where all expats go party, just one bar after another). I told him to wait until they have real parties when the semester starts.

Just curious, how did you end up with these two? I mean if you are looking for a fun school with a great education, I can think of plenty of schools that are between Cornell and Brandeis in selectivity and much more social than Brandeis.

Vanderbilt
Emory
UNC
UVA
Michigan
Georgetown

…all come to mind. There are lots more. Why Brandeis?
