Son is biology/pre-med and music ( piano performance) double major or major/minor. He has always wanted to be a doctor, and also is gifted in classical piano. He was offered the $24K music scholarship to Miami's Frost School of Music. Cornell didn't give us much aid, and we know we will have medical school loans down the road, and his sister in college in 2 more years. But it's Cornell, and only 2 1/2 hours away by car, Miami is about a 3 hr plane ride. Any advice?

it would be a shame to not practice his music while in college…i’m sure its very therapeutic for him…

if it’s cheaper at miami…i’d go there…

miami’s dual major in music would give your son something to fall back on if med school doesnt work for him :)

thanks, you’re so right, it is very therapeutic for him, a real stress reliever. Cornell has a small music dept, but highly regarded, esp. in composition. I still wonder how much actual playing time he’d have while there.

Of course, thousands of non-music majors at Cornell continue to practice their music at Cornell:

A lot. If he made time for it. Tons of pre-meds join chamber ensembles, sing for the Glee Club, or do private lessons.

You need to figure out if he wants a music education with biology tacked on. Or a biology major with music tacked on. And which one is worth more.

there are many who play piano at cornell though its not their main squeeze…

He wants to do a pre-med track, not sure if he wants to major in biology or music. If he majors in biology, he would def. minor in music. He has no interest in music education, just continuing piano and performing.

Cornell’s not the best place to major in music performance. It’s a great place to major in something else and continue to perform.

Also, you think if he majored in music it’d be a great stress-reliever?

Definitely false. He will be so ****ed off at it by the end that he loses the joy of playing.
So many creative types who go to college specifically for that burn-out so quickly.
