I got the letter and invite today but does anyone know what this thing means? how many ppl get it? and whats up with the 8000 as a "support account?"

Every year 50 people in the freshman class will get the title "Cornell Presidential Research Scholar". The money in the support account will provide you with the financial research throughout your research career at Cornell. For example, if you want to conduct an independent research at MIT during of your summers, CPRS will pay for your housing and food throughout that semester. You are even qualify to get additional money to pay off your tuition through research.

Only 50 receive it? And what is it based on? Grades, SAT..cuz mine were all average and i must have got it only for my outside research.
Is it only given to Engineering students or to people from HE, A&S,...
It seems like a tough program..
ecc are you a pres. scholar? If so, how is the workload, do you know if people are unable to maintain thier 3.0 avg (you get kicked out of the program if your avg goes below 3.0)

Thanks in advance for answering my many questions, lol, but it will really help in clearing up any doubts I had of whether or not I can handle the workload because I think that is the ONLY factor I have yet to weigh between cornell and my other college choices. Thx.. ;)

Congrats! That's great. Did any of you guys have any background in research? Or do they just pick qualified applicants?

It must be based on background in research. I had pretty good academic stats (no displayed interest in research though) and didn't get picked. You can get selected as a sophomore but it is much more difficult.
