Cornell RD Class of 2023 Discussion Thread

It was the human ecology one!

I also got the email! Does anybody know if it’s just an email sent to all Human Ecology applicants?

@oldfort , AO’s disclosing admission decisions prior to release date is a breach of the whole process. And I can’t believe that AO’s can see these results before students see them in their portals. These are all confidential! Am I wrong?I think it comprises the whole admission process.

I don’t want my HS counselor to see my results before I do … :((

@ivygirl221 I just got that same email today too! I applied for Human Ecology. It was an email thanking me for my application and to keep up my activities and academics with excellence and integrity. Idk what this means and why they would send this.

I agree with @butete

THe whole thing’s just wrong

If the email is authentic @Bishoptoaster
THats a good sign.

typo there- I meant HS counselors seeing results before students do (not AO’s)! And at the same time disclosing to their favorites- that’s a violation for sure!!!

Yeah. Ikr! @butete

I heard some areas across the world, some more than others, have like paid ‘counselors’ who completely forge a students app, and then connect with AO/Adm. Reps. due to their influence/wealth/power and push the app through regardless.

Hence they know what’ll be happening, and its mostly positive in this case.

There’s something that came up in a news channel I follow recently which speaks something similar.

The jist: a bunch of actors/influential people were arrested as they were caught doing this and directly bribing the AO member(s). THey also paid certain people to take the testing for them and bribe certain people to get certain scores (subject tests/APs/ACT/SAT and alike).

This involved top schools (Ivy’s and non’s).

@oldfort

My school’s a private one, and ik my counselor has good ties with 1 yale and 1 brown (if not more idk of) regional admissions representatives.

Idk how frequently or what, if at all she talks to them, but regardless, she said that she can ‘see decisions before we get them’. When I asked her, she says she gets some sort of electronic notification beforehand (before decisions day, idk how many days before) that give her the students status.

I get why and how the former could be done, even though its bordering on illegal, but idk how the latter idea could even be executed.

Just a thanking u for your app email doesnt speak much, but one with encouragement or positivity may (mostly) or even may not suggest SOME things.

@TheGuy1
I’ve been thinking about your counselor’s claim about being able to “see” decisions early—and I think she was lying to all of you to exert control. I believe that counselors at some very elite US schools have direct relationships that may allow them to get inside info (per @oldfort, or my son’s school sends lots of kids to Notre Dame, so it wouldn’t surprise me if there is a connection there…), but I don’t think it is likely that your counselor gets all of your decisions early. Just my (somewhat informed) opinion. Best of luck!

@Econphdmom

Thanks! That really helps put me to ease. Makes sense too.

Our school has been around for 10-11 years only, and is filled with 99.99% internationals (there have been only 3 US citz. in the history of my school, 2 in my batch and 1 2 years ago)

They started applying to US colleges in like 2012-2013. So that leaves about 7 years of college history in my school.

So far, among the top schools (excluding me since I wont divulge my decisions here), we have 2 Browns, 1 Yale, 1 JHU, 1 NU, 2 CMU’s, and 2 GATech’s. Thats about it. Many have tried applying and have failed, as our school values the pristine 4.0 over anything else, to the point where students have literally 0 EC’s. U really cant expect anything there if thats the case.

In conclusion: i dont think theres a deep bond betw. my GC and any AO member that has a say in the process.

i can only tell you from experience my daughter 2 years ago received an email requesting more fin aid documents 3 or 4 days before ED determination, which was acceptance. If you received fin aid request you are probably in in some form. Remember Cornell has more than one type of admission ( i.e. freshman year deferred to bing u etc)

@richardsenic

Which schools does this theory apply to? Just Cornell or other top schools too? It may mean mixed things for different people if what you say is true.

Again, this doesnt bar an applicant from getting in without that sort of email (maybe the FA comm. has enough data then?), especially if the app sends everything months beforehand hence giving them everything thats possibly FA related

the financial aid office sent this notice to 8 of the 10 accepted applicants in my dtrs school who applied ED and all got in The other 2 were from very wealthy fams and i assume they didnt apply for aid

as far as what other schools do i can only tell you my cornell experience.As far as the fin aid office “having all the documents” they dont start figuring out rewards until they know whos been accepted. the next 3-4 weeks is hell for them

@richardsenic

So you mean to say…they’ll still send the email? or just that they look at it after acceptance from the backend, and then notify the app of any missing things?

i believe the decisions have been made and forwarded to the fin aid office? they are contacting applicants is the only logical explanation. Now dont despair because remember these are human beings handling the finaid decisions Just because you havent received a finaid email doesnt mean you werent accepted, it could just mean your finaid person is slower or has been out sick etc.or that you dont qualify for much finaid other than loans.

one thing i learned from this process , having gone through it with my kids is dont try to read into the tea leaves too much
