AFAIK Cornell engineering has a high retention rate.
They don’t try to flunk kids out, and not that many kids do flunk out.
@negsplits18 - The retention rate is very high for Cornell engineering. Yes it’s hard. It’s engineering. It won’t be different anywhere else.
The weather is highly variable in Ithaca. Just wait a few hours and it will change ; )
@monydad From a statistical standpoint, yes. What i explained was from a logical one.
I agree
Thank you everyone! Great feedback. I feel relieved.
Does anyone know if the TO option i got for SHA majoring in real estate is guaranteed if I meet their requirements? Can’t seem to find that anywhere and if any current SHA students can confirm, SHA is where you would get your real estate major in from Cornell right?
@SaberArtori Unless they havent asked it in the app or in any form, u have to declare it in Fall. For more clarity, ask the Q to the adcoms email ID.
@SaberArtori – I do not know if the TO is a guaranteed transfer. Somewhere along the way, the university shifted from use of the term Guaranteed Transfer to TO.
To answer your second question, yes, SHA is where one could concentrate in RE.

Anyone know anything about the John McMullen Dean’s scholarship? Thanks.
@Momofseveral10 The first line of inquiry is a direct email/phone to the ADCOM and/or FINAIDCOM. Else, search it up on the Finaid Scholarships section on the College’s page.
Personally, idk, but they make finaid revisions and additions and/or releases variably after D-Day.
@Momofseveral10 What did you want to know about the McMullen Scholarship?
@billchu2 I was wondering what on-campus perks might go along with it besides the financial aid grants. Special research or intern opportunities?
@Momofseveral10 Thats given either in the Finaid pack in some cases, or u have to ask/apply for em.
So I think a school like Cornell, especially for STEM and Engg, doesnt have research fund shortage, so ig they have to ask, email/on campus when the yr starts for that money, or apply. In most cases, they’ll ask the ‘thoroughness’ of the app which is mainly questions for its use, and the rough intended idea for it. If the technicality of the research and the amt is justified, ig the grant is given for a certain timespan with certain conditions (like maybe some apparatus cant be bought and so on)…
But in rare cases, they see the app potential and already grant it in the Finaid pack. There they see immense potential for the app for wise use of money, extensive ideas, and experience, and trust em.
@CT1417 Transfers are worth trying, but nothing to bank on. It may be a possible admit, as the % admit rate for Cornell aint too relatively bleak.
It depends on seat avail. / school (in Cornell) too.
I’m wondering what are the chances of getting into the newer dorms for freshmen?
@Micc well i think there’s an application procedure… and it depends on 1st come 1st serve… but then again it also depends on the room amt. there.
It is by lottery when it comes to room assignment, except for few that are given to some “special students.” It is not first come first serve, as long as you submit your housing application by May 1.
Echoing @oldfort here. Pure lottery. No advantage to ED or responding earlier. Medical condition may require air-conditioning, but otherwise, everyone is in the same pool.
There are a lot of singles, so if one requests and pays the single surcharge, a single will be awarded. No guarantee on where that single will be located. The only ‘sure thing’ AFAIK is requesting Balch.
@oldfort Thank you for the clarification… It is application based i think, but I was wrong to have put the assumption of other colleges I know of onto this one.
Unless Cornell has changed their housing app, they ask very few questions. Something to the effect of bedtime, quite/noisy, that sort of thing. I don’t recall the ‘app’ being all that detailed, especially in comparison to some other colleges’ housing surveys.
Correcting my post above where I said that Balch is the only dorm one can request. Apparently freshman can also elect to live in the Program Houses. These will have a mix of graduating years together, whereas the majority of North Campus housing is freshman only within one building.

@TheGuy1 @oldfort @CT1417 Thank you for your replies. Yes, the questionnaire for housing is very simple. My mom would prefer me getting a single but I would like a roommate so my order of preference is double, triple, quad and single. I wonder what happens if you don’t get along with your roommate(s).
