I CAN'T BELIEVE I GOT ACCEPTED TO CORNELL!!
I'm a Penn legacy and they deferred and then rejected me!
But, my Cornell interviewer really liked me and my recommendation came from my advisor who really likes me and who I had for 4 years....AND HE IS A CORNELL ALUM!!
STATS: SAT: 2160
Average on my SAT II Submect tests: 760 (750 chem and 760 Spanish).
Got a 5 on 3 AP's junior year...I took one AP exam without ever taking the course and got a 5.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: How in the world did I get in?

Decision: Rejected

Stats:

ACT - 35 (with a perfect English & Science)
GPA - 3.7/4.0 (weighted)
Rank - N/A (school doesn't rank)
Senior courseload - Toughest possible
Other - National Merit Finalist

Subjective:

Essays - I didn't get any help from anyone on these (unlike most of the posters I've encountered on this forum), so I have no idea if they stacked up favorably to the typical Cornell applicant or not, but I do know that writing has always been one of my greatest strengths, and I think I picked a very appropriate topic for my essays as well.

Teacher Rec's - My counselor told me they were outstanding, but I wasn't given permission to read them.

Location/Person:

State: Tennessee
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income: Middle
Hooks: N/A
Strengths: Test score, my school's academic reputation (if considered), and my community service.
Weaknesses: I'm a white kid at a competitive school.

Other:

Extracurriculars - Two hours a day since freshman year tutoring kids in an inner-city school reserved for at-risk students; four years of Beta Club; four years as the president of my school's Film Society; four years of basketball; four years of youth group; four years of band; etc.

Why I think I was denied - I'm really not sure why I was denied, but judging by the way some of the other schools have accepted my URM friends at public schools with lower test scores, I think that being a white male from a private school may have actually worked against me, in that it not only put me at a disadvantage against URM's but that it was also harder to get the same 4.0+ GPA that most of my public school friends had. I figured that my school's strength would be taken into consideration, because if they actually did rank students, I'd be in the top three or so, but apparently they just took my GPA as is without inquiring as to why it was lower than the public school kid's.

WHERE SHOULD I go?
UNC Chapel Hill or Cornell. I have never seen Cornell, so I better go and visit.
You can't beat the great weather at UNC. Where should I go?

hahahaaha reeeeeeejected... college is so random, into georgetown and waitlist at brown... wheeeeee!
