Subjective:
ECs listed on app: some academic competitions, some service organizations, some sports, some political stuff, and much more. I consider myself pretty busy.
Job/Work Experience: I've done something with every summer, mostly less impressive jobs (camp counselor, snack bar employee etc). I was offered a position as a research assistant at Penn this summer, but that doesn't show on my app.
Essays (subject and responses): I like my essays, and I think I showed heavy interest.
Teacher Recs: They should all be glowing, I hope!
Counselor Rec: My counselor loves me.
Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): They called and asked if I wanted one, and I declined (because it sounded like just an informational thing and I didn't have any questions I couldn't find the answer to myself). I was worried about this, but apparently it doesn't matter!
Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): nothing, in particular.

Location/Person:

My big brother went to Cornell, and I've worshipped him since I was little, so getting accepted was awesome!!

reading these stats kind of convinces me they pick out of a hat.

yea they definitely do...
i mean yes, we can't tell EVERYTHING about an applicant simply from stats but c'mon cornell was so random this year

They just seemed to accept applicants with high SAT scores and good EC's. It didn't seem that surprising.

Saying that Cornell picked out of a hat to decide admissions is a bit insulting to those who got into the school.

You really can't tell much about the student based on mere stats. Maybe their essays were great. Maybe the admissions committee saw something in the student, a certain je ne sais quois, that made them decide that that particular student should be admitted. It's on a case-by-case basis and certainly cannot be compared to the act of picking out of a hat.

Well...maybe it was the sorting hat. They drugged u and put it on ur head and u didn't even realize. Welcome to Gryffindor baby! lol (or ravenclaw, where the intelligent kids go. I'd say it's a mix, like Hermione) (and she's hot, zing to the other threads who say smart girls aren't hot! lol). Ya, I just went Harry Potter on ur arse and I donno y. Can't wait for the movie! hahaha

wow. just wow.

DECISION: ACCEPTED COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES THROUGH HEOP PROGRAM

Fee Waiver: Used
Sat: M-540/W:640/V:570
SAT 2: (i did bad) Spanish-a miserable 470/U.S History-520/English 510
G.P.A: 3.3
Rank: #1
Ap: A.P US History 2 (we were behind)
CourseLoad- Most Arduous

Essays: Showed how I love Computer Science and how I plan to attend Cornell Grad School after graduating Cornell Undergrad. Other essay (common app) showed how I am not a statistic in a section of Brooklyn where males drop out of high school, join gangs and sell drugs while the girls graduate but get pregnant early, do not attend college and hold mediocre jobs.
Recommendations: All excellent, I can't remember which ones specifically. They showed how even when I was still on top of my classes, I still went to tutoring and took advantage of opportunities.
Hook: Being a Black Female from a poor section of Brooklyn that is also academically disadvantaged.

Location: The Brownsville section of Brooklyn, NY
School Type: Um..my school is new but we have EXCELLENT stats..also small class sizes
Ethnicity: African American/Black
Income: Low Class

Why was I accepted: I think I was accepted because of the things i listed under the hooks section but largely because of the HEOP program. I am not even going to lie, without HEOP I HIGHLY DOUBT that I would have been accepted.

HEOP sounds really amazing. It really means ANY PERSON, any study (mission statement). It's a really great thing.

Comments:
I found out my decision in early March, but I was an RD-er. I decided to re-post my stats in this thread because it's the official RD thread, or I think it it is. My entire class was happy for me when they found out I got in because it was "my dream school" since 7th grade. I didn't think I would get into because my SATs are terrrible, but I guess they weren't much of a hindrance.
Congratulations to all who got in!

Contrary to what you are saying, I think they accepted applicants with high GPA rather than SAT scores. (At least for the Engineering school)

would people with "guaranteed transfer" stop putting their stats here, make your own thread

A lot of the people with low SAT scores and high GPA's who were accepted were special cases. Or atleast, that's what it seemed like. Most acceptances went to those with 2200+ scores, so those are not really "low" scores.

My SATS are terrible, but for my senior class, I was easily 100+ points above everyone else, even 300+ compared to some.

I'm just glad that my 2000 and 2040 worked in my favor.

Look at the Early Decision thread. A lot of people under 2200, and in many cases even under 2100 got in. However, they all had EXCELLENT GPAs.

I don't think they give too much consideration to the SAT relatively to GPA.

I think its the same for all selective schools. Everyone is using SAT, GPA and class rank to determine a selectivity of a school anyway, why complain?
