Is cornell safer than the other Ivy league schools? that's what I would infer since it's in a smaller city.

generally, i'd say probably. The campus itself is extremely safe. Off campus can get a little iffy, but I bet it's still much safer than NYC, Philly, etc.

"The campus itself is extremely safe"

during business hours maybe, but i wouldnt go walking alone after hours :P

I've been out plenty of times between 2-4 AM, partially (or fully) wasted on numerous occasions - the campus is totally safe then

what gomestar said. I wouldn't consider walking home drunk alone at night in many other places, yet I've done it numerous times at Cornell, over the suspension bridge and through a woody area. of course, it's more sensible to take a cab or walk in a group, but drunk times call for drunk measures.

gomestar: you've done this alone? and you're a guy arent you?

I've done it alone occasionally - most of the time has been with at least 1 other person. For my first year, I'd sometimes trek across campus from west to the far corner of north to join my gf or something. Safety was never an issue.

Most of my explorations have led me to believe that I am of the male gender.

i've had some late nite treks on the TCAT bus from the commons to central and then on foot to north...never have had an incident, but thats not to say that crimes do not occur on campus or just outside of campus...

in fact didnt yall get the email about the Wilson Farms grocery store in collegetown getting robbed???

"drunk times call for drunk measures."

-lmaoo

off campus can be a little sketchy - on campus though you'll be fine. There's plenty of the blue rape lights around just in case.

I've walked through campus alone as early/late as 4-5am before. Funny thing is I'd see at least a few others doing the same thing...

The simple answer is yes, of course, mostly because Cornell is located within an area that has a minute fraction the population of those of the other Ivies (except Dartmouth). However, the answer is actually much more complicated than that: most crime is student-on-student, dorms have various degrees of security, and college students are about 200-500 times more likely to die in 30MPH+ car crashes (which generally more frequently affect students at rural/suburban schools such as Cornell than those who can walk everywhere) than they are in any form of random violence. To put things in perspective, there were more students killed at Virginia Tech this year than in all the random campus crime across the entire country's 3,500 colleges and universities in the past 5-10 years combined. Also, even Ithaca has more than its share of wealth disparity and therefore the occasional campus mugging etc. See http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=375626 for a few additional facts and discussion on the topic. Bottom line is that you should watch out for your own security no matter where you are or what you are doing. Walking alone while drunk at 4AM is taking a calculated risk, which rises or declines depending on where you walk, how good the lighting is, how drunk you are, how you "carry" yourself, and how often you take a look at your surroundings -- certainly safer than driving home, but probably a bit less safe than using the escort service.
