My D needs a computer before she starts at Cornell in the fall, and I see that Cornell offers a student discount if you buy one there. How does this discount compare to, say, the $150 discount she can get through Best Buy as a student? (She will probably be looking at a lower-end MacBook.)

As a tech nerd and a shopper, I can tell you that Cornell’s discounts probably aren’t as good as some of the sales you can find elsewhere. I’ve found far superior sales, many of which aren’t even student discounts. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions - I’m a tech shopper, so I’ve seen a lot of these kinds of sales and am familiar with the prices. @mdcmom

I have bought all of our MacBooks at Cornell. At least few years back, their discount was much better. I would call them up directly to order instead of doing it online. Sometimes they have specials too.

Bought my MacBook Air immediately I arrived campus last year, the only thing nice was that I got a printer and a gift card I never used. The discount was basically the same as that from Apple. P.S. Don’t forget you have to pay like $100 extra in taxes. Your D would learn that Cornell Store is a ridiculously expensive store as we all have. Check for better options elsewhere and only buy from Cornell Store if you have exhausted every option possible.

I had the laptops sent to our home.

We did the same as Oldfort. The discount was as good as the Apple store for student pricing with the same bonus, we got free shipping (that offer will be available at some point soon) and they didn’t charge tax because it was shipped to our home. It was the best price we could find.

@NJcornellmom how come there was no tax?
^I think it depends on where you live, right? If you are shipping of state and there is no physical brick and mortar location in your state, then I think there is no sales tax. I could be wrong though.
Yes, since there is no Cornell Store in NJ, there was no tax added to the order. Just like other times when ordering online, customers are expected to calculate their own taxes and declare them on tax forms. At their discretion as a “use tax”. For this reason (and at the request of those states that require it) a lot of online retailers have started charging those taxes even without a local presence.
oh, i didn’t know that. so if i buy from cornell store and ship to nyc, no tax right?
^There is a brand new Cornell store in NYC, so if that’s the case, then you would be charged tax.

Anyway, NYC is still New York state. There would be tax no matter what.
dam ok thanks
