Cornell Supplement

Can anyone give me an example of what to write in the college of arts and science supplement?

It is so confusing.. or at least explain what the question is looking for..

"Describe your intellectual interests, their evolution, and what makes them exciting to you. Tell us how you will utilize the academic programs in the College of Arts and Sciences to further explore your interests, intended major, or field of study."

Is there anyone else doing this??

I look at it as basicaly another form of why did u pick ur major and how are u going to utilize us
I recommend writing about ur passion, what do u want to major in? what made u chose that, talk about a class etc

I want to major in chemistry... but what about the "evolution" part.. Doesn't that indicate some change or something? Thanks.. I think I understand the second part of it.. but I think this is one of the harder question to answer!! Anyone else??

Your interest in chemistry probably did not spring full-blown from the head of the gods. First there was a spark, and then some experiences fanned that spark into a passion for this particular field of study.

Describe the spark and the subsequent experiences.

Please excuse the mixed metaphors!

haha hmm i see i see........... thanks.. i think i have some idea.. but i am still stuck on how to utilize programs at cornell to achieve my goal...... i mean it has great faculty, facility, talented students, research, etc etc... isnt that all cliche?

i looked up the programs that cornell offers, picked one that i am specifically interested in, and wrote about why i am interested in it and how it is a good match for me. it's pretty cliche, but what else can you do. :p as long as it's well written, shows that you put some honest thought into it, and personal (between you and the school), you should be fine.

I too am stuck on this one ...

I'm thinking of writing an essay on my travels to Pakistan and how the differences in political structure influenced my interest in politics and how the differences in the practice of medicine influenced my interest in the medical profession. I hope this is right, because it does say "describe your intellectual interestS"(plural). Anyone have any thoughts on if I'm doing the right thing?

This is a hard essay! For those of you applying to the College of Arts and Sciences, what did you focus on - your intellectual interests or the school? I wrote 437 words on my intellectual interests and their evolution and spent a mere 97 words on how Cornell. Is this too much focus on myself?

I think this essay is half, why you are interest in this major, and the other half is why Cornell. I think they have this essay is to weed out those who just apply to any school(prestigue?) or those who select a less impacted major so they can get into Cornell easily.

hmm so i tried to look for "programs" for science major, but there really isn't much.. i mean its just being able to research at undergraduate level.. where can i look for programs for science section?? would exchange programs benefit science major?
i agree with fluxxii;s approach...

Oh crap. I already wrote my essay about my passion in the Common App. Can I send some colleges that essay and another essay to Cornell?

it says maximum of 500 words...... can i exceed it? usually, when it says "should", i don't mind going over a bit.. but it specifically states maximum 500... help?

^^don't try to exceed bro.

bro? :D

you wouldn't want to read your essay, and neither do they--it's only human.

All of cornell's prompts give room for a wide range of responses--but they want a reason to accept you into that specific school. so yeah, just sum up how you now love whatever science and blah blah. just write and proofread, chances are you'll have answered the prompt

doin' mine right now

What would be a safe minimum? Just as long as it answers the question?
