Cornell Top Ivy Sports Program, in top 20% in nation

Cornell was 55th in Directors' Cup standings of all 289 NCAA Division I athletic programs based on national championships and overall team performance. Princeton and Harvard were next, then Penn, Columbia and Brown, with Yale and Dartmouth bringing up the rear.

Cornell finished ahead of such schools as Boston College, Miami, Kansas, Syracuse, and West Virginia.

Overall, Ivy League was sixth among all conferences in the country, ahead of Big East and Conference USA, among others. Three PAC 10 schools, one ACC school and one Big 10 school led the way.

Go Big Red! Whoo!

wow that's great!

Princeton had been the usual top Ivy. Cornell's success is especially significant as hockey had a down year and lacrosse lost in the NCAA semifinals when it appeared that the then-undefeated team had the national title in its grasp.

Just wait until next year, when Football, Hockey, Basketball, Wrestling, and Lacrosse all capture Ivy titles.

Okay, well, Football might be a stretch. But Women's Volleyball should make put forth a good effort again next year. And next year will be the year for Big Red Basketball.

What's even more impressive about this ranking is that many sports that Cornell traditionally does well in (polo, men's crew, sprint football) aren't even NCAA sanctioned, and aren't taken into consideration.

Gymnastics has a very strong team this year as well.

cornell's synchro team was the only one out of the ivys to make it to synchronized skating nationals :)

don't forget track...everyone always forgets track

And that is a particular strength at Cornell--men's and women's did well at NCAA national championships as well as being tops in Ivy League.
