Lingustics, international affairs major, planning on law school. Any suggestions on which school to choose?

I'm not sure about linguistics and international affairs at JHU, so I can't speak about them.

You can't go wrong with either Cornell or UPenn though, so your decision shouldn't be based upon academics or department strength but rather atmosphere and location (Middle of nowhere for Cornell, smack in the middle of the city for UPenn), financial aid, etc. etc.

Ithaca is one of the best collegetowns in the US, easy with the 'middle of nowhere' cliche phrase.

I'd say U Penn.

well, admittedly, johns hopkins has the #1 ranked international relations department in the country....upenn isnt good for anything really, except for business.

Linguistics (sociolinguistics) is best at UPenn out of those 3 school. IR is the best at JHU of those schools. However, I can't comment on the ling prog @JHU or the IR prog @ UPenn. But at least now you can rule out Cornell.

^^ it's not just socioling that's good at Penn -- all the areas of ling are pretty damn good at Penn. How can you rule out Cornell? It has an equally strong ling department. For example, the Gourman undergrad ling ranking:

UCLA

U Chicago

UC Berkeley

U Penn

Cornell

JHU does not have a ling program to my knowledge.

http://www.krieger.jhu.edu/

So you can rule out JHU if you really want linguistics. In your case, either Penn or Cornell would be good (both for ling and IR).

In which of the three are people most passionate about these programs? Any thoughts?

For linguistics, either Penn or Cornell, though probably more so Penn, as it's one of the (few?) areas that it's at the top in. (Cornell's great in many things.)

I don't know why you guys keep referring to JHU's graduate international relations program, which is located in DC, in relation to its undergraduate major in IR. It's the same as telling someone to go to Cornell for pre-med because it has a good med school, despite the fact that the latter is located 500 miles away in NYC.

^^^

haha, I drive by it on my way to work everyday (JHU) and the first day I was like - wait a minute, am I in Baltimore somehow or have I been uninformed for several years now. I now realize it's a different campus.

hmm probably not Johns Hopkins...

I'd say penn or cornell...

it all depends on what you like, are you more of a city person or a rural person

undergrad hopkins IR is strong too. dont rule it out just because its not ivy.
all these schools are good for prelaw. why dont you just alpply to all, see what u get into.
tufts and gtown r also good in IR

i have similar interests to you, and got into both cornell and jhu. clearly cornell's where it's at

sarahhhh: I think one would rule out JHU in this case because it doesn't have a linguistics program. =p

it's just that i was interested in IR and prelaw. so i subconsciously assume everyone else is as well. sorry lol
