Cornell University Class of 2013 RD Results

lol tell me. How many people like that do YOU personally know who got into cornell/cornell-like schools?

Get over yourself, people can’t be lazy in HS like you say and bank on their gender/race in order to get into a top 20 school.

^^ I agree…you can’t underestimate the value of teacher recs/counselor rec/essays…

Why do people assume that URMs have lower stats than those accepted? I know plenty of URMs that have 33+ Act Scores, and 2250+ Sat Scores…

I’m positive that there would be better people of their race that got accepted because they worked for it. The person you wrote about wouldn’t get in because the admissions process is about making matches. Why would any school worth its salt accept someone with horrible essays, subterranean test scores, and failing grades if they know for sure that they can’t keep up with the rigorous pace of their institution?

And on top of that, accepted students can get financial aid. I highly doubt Cornell or any Ivy would accept your hypothetical URM if there’s any chance that they have to dish out $53,000 or so for their attendance.

hey celtic19 are u an international student? if so, where are u from?

Reading it again, I guess the second half of the sentence was arrogant. But it’s still better than the fake modesty that comes along with the posts that include full stats.

still arrogant^^, how is there fake modesty?

the fact that your username is nuke doesn’t comfort me either…

Most of this talk about URMs is somewhat right. I agree that to assume a URM has lower stats is completely irrational, but I will not deny that, on average, they do have lower stats. Just like females in engineering have lower states than males. Or many legacy admits have lower stats than non-legacies. This is true at almost any school. And I kind of like it. Who would want the CoE to be mostly white, Indian, or Asian males (aka sausage fest)? I want a school that combines people from diverse backgrounds. If that means accepting people with slightly lower stats, who am I to complain? I am sure many minority admits work just as hard and are just as intelligent and will bring just as much to the table as everyone else. It’s not like you may end up rooming with a moron!

It’s quite sad that I know many, many students who are like Nuke. They seem robotic, arrogant, and often do things for the sole purpose of college admission. It’s a sad to see them being accepted to top-notch universities and pollute the cleanness of people’s fragile souls.

^great post senior…

sometimes i get upset on the inside just because I’m an Asian female and I feel that I have it harder simply because of my ORM status. but it’s so true, I would never want to go to a school with just asians. and in reality–this admissions process isn’t about just finding the most “intelligent” student, but really students who are open minded and willing to contribute to an amazing learning experience. students who will seriously take advantage of the opportunities presented to them. why complain? not to mention, i am lucky and very fortunate to have had certain opportunities that other students haven’t. i come from a family where education is the sole most important they care about.

man all i know is that march 31st cant come soon enough!!!

Nuke: Please read other people’s comments before sending me another (potentially) angry statement. Think - was your arrogance necessary? It was not only unnecessary but also uncalled for. Please take that entitlement and arrogance somewhere else.

Last post. I don’t want to be the focus of the RD decision thread. It’s compromising the purpose of the discussion.

I know it’s still arrogant and I admitted as much. I’m not trying to defend myself or my comment. Out of curiosity, would it make you all feel better if I retracted it?

I meant that at least I’m honest vs the ppl who post up 2400s, 800 sat2s, 100+ GPAs and ask do you think i have a chance? Were they really expecting a no? It’s an example, there are more examples of fake modesty.

My username is Nuke because I’m thinking of using it as my future son’s middle name. I figured I’d give him a normal first name (don’t care to decide what right now) and a cool middle name so that he could use it as a nickname if he hated the first name. Since I sometimes hate my first name and, come to think of it, last name too. I’m not trying to subliminally turn people onto the idea of mutually assured destruction. Don’t worry, I love people too. Also, I know I come off as a jackass but I’m actually not unpopular (I can’t say popular because that’s arrogant as well, isn’t it?) in the real world. Of course, I’m also nicer in the real world. I suppose a lot nicer.

And I messaged FB lalaland but that’s was dumb because I ended up posting anyway. What I said was that I don’t do things for the sole purpose of getting into college. That comment rly annoyed me because those are precisely the type of ppl I hate. Also grades do not dominate my life. I’m actually a rly happy individual who does not want HS to end, which I think is the biggest contrast between me and “those people”.

To FB lalaland: for the record, it wasn’t angry. It was actually civil, unlike yours.

What first drew me to Cornell was its friendliness toward middle class, which is often characterized as “diligent”, “humble”, “grateful” and phrases like “ordinary people who do extraordinary things.”

Your sense of entitlement (“because I deserve it”) defies all virtues of a middle class individual. Not only that, you belittle others, and divulge a sense of superiority. This is not the image of Cornell I would like to see.

Again, before you send me another bitter and angry comment, please read what others have to say.

To FB lalaland: I know I said that was the last post but since you are disinclined to PM-ing me, I guess I’ll have to reply here.

First of all, don’t generalize. Middle class is a broad catagory and no one fits cleanly into stereotypes, least of all me. Humble is crossed out because obviously that’s the issue. Diligent? Yarr, I barely get any sleep. Grateful? Yes I am, to my family members, friends, and teachers. I guess since we’re talking about typical middle class people, I should add “God” but I’m atheist so that doesn’t work out. So should grateful get crossed off too? Ordinary ppl who do extraordinary things? That’s yet to be seen.

All schools are friendly towards the middle class and I’m not anti-middle class. So that’s an invalid assumption.

Also, in case you deleted my most recent message too: I think you’re constructing imaginary monsters. Arrogance isn’t the end-all of virtue.

And again: it wasn’t an angry message.

Lastly, I read all four pages of the thread. What am I supposed to be looking for?

I personally no longer have an issue with you. I took your first post as an insult against myself and others who were accepted; and so accordingly, called you arrogant-which it was.
However, based on your recent posts, you seem to be genuinely sorry for that dubious remark which brought this thread to an uproar. Thus, lets not dwell on this and move on with other accepted students’ posts of happiness captured in a still frame of words.

[ *] Counselor Rec: Ehh… to be honest, I have no idea. Probably fairly generic.

[ *] Important ECs: Quite a few. Just to name the two most important: I am a part of a club rowing team. Crew is massive time commitment, and Cornell’s Lightweight Rowing is the currently the best in the world. I went to nationals in the Lightweight 8+ two years ago, and the Lightweight 4+ last year, although I am not good enough to even be talked to by the coach. I have also been a musician my whole life. My main instrument is the drums, but I have a home studio and prefer music composition and music recording over performance. I have a record on iTunes called “Lost Conversation” by Shattered by the Sea. It was 100% FYI, all recorded and composed in my home studio. I also placed 2nd in a Southern California music composition contest.
