Hi, was curious if you (your daughter) was able to negotiate and increase her Cornell grant award? Also, just wanting to understand that the IDOC document submission and FASFA is an annual process? This is all new to me and my family. Really appreciate your help! Thank you! @TiggyB62
@stem2021, yes, FAFSA, CSS Profile and any IDOC materials requested by Cornell are required every year if you want to be considered for FA. We did not (and have not so far) negotiate for additional aid for our D. Her package was very generous, and more than we were expecting, frankly. It’ll probably change for next year though, as we will have one less child in college. We are anxious and a bit nervous to see what the package will be, because for current students, that info will not come to us until June or July.
However, Cornell will match awards from what they consider to be their “peer” schools: other Ivies, Duke, MIT, Stanford. At least that is what the list has been. It may have changed, so best to look at it. Otherwise, they are stingy about matching awards from other schools. If your personal financial situation has changed for the worse (divorce, layoff, death of spouse, other loss of income or family situation) since the time you applied for aid, then you definitely should write a letter of appeal. There is a process for this on the FA website at Cornell. You will be required to submit proof etc. and you may still be denied, but generally they will work with you.
ok so I heard greek life is a huge, huge part of Cornell & it’s abnormal to not be in some sorority/fraternity. is this accurate??
The financial aid office fixed my to do list since IDOC said documents were missing but they weren’t. Does anyone know how much longer I have to wait for my aid? It wasn’t my fault so I hope I wasn’t penalized for this and would have to wait a month.
Is there a groupme?
@STEM2021 can’t answer all but yes, definitely an annual process.
Will cornell match an offer from Johns Hopkins?
@mdchang99 you should check the website to see which schools Cornell deems “peer” institutions for matching. I don’t think JHU is on the list, but it doesn’t hurt to appeal if the offers are far apart.
Registered for Cornell Days, but could not get an overnight stay with a student at the CALS school. I would love to stay over but that is the only day I can visit. Any suggestions?
@cthulhi did you hear anything from FA? We also owed documents which we had previously sent. Instead of calling we just completed the documents again - figured it might be quicker.
@Treelovr_ yes there is you can find a link on the facebook class of 2021 page or message someone from it
Wow, cornell actually gave better aid than jhu.
@MomEof3 They got back to me on Monday and said they fixed everything and then again today but only to ask me more questions about my mother’s taxes since there was a tiny discrepancy but I replied back.
Glad glad to hear someone got a good aid package! @mdchang99
@elise303 My son had the same issue. He’s going to stay at some fairly cheap motel (not sure which one) not too far from campus.
@Lvillegrad, hmmm… not a bad idea. Is he visiting CALS?
@OnEdge2021 He’s visiting CAS.
My D got into the engineering program and nominated for a scholarship why she have to do the summer program, her grades and achievement are superb. It’s anyone in the same situation(
@sophia2012 Yes my D is in the same boat - surprised the conditional acceptance was a mandatory prefresh summer program. I am trying to convince her to keep an open mind when she goes to visit in a couple of weeks.
@JAMCAFE we contacted the school and waiting for an answer, her sister graduated from Columbia and she said the summer program in Columbia is for people who needs help, my D got accepted to Princenton, Berkley, Columbia and JHU we don’t think she needs help. Really concern why?
