Cornell University - Spring 2018 Transfer - Discussion Thread

@ILRSLUG If I had to guess I’d say decisions would start around the 21st of November. I think the people accepted before Thanksgiving may get a call whereas the people accepted after may only receive an online decision. Are you applying to any other schools?

@ILRHopeful Okay that makes sense, thank you! And no, this is actually the only program I’m applying to. What about you? I really don’t think my GPA is high enough (3.8) because I only see old posts of 4.0’s getting in but I have a lot of labor union experience so I’m just hoping a miracle happens lol.

@ILRSLUG I understand although I think you have a great shot at ILR. Their main concern is “fit” which you definitely have. I’m not applying anywhere else because ILR is my top choice although if denied admission again I’ll be applying elsewhere for Fall 2018 in addition to reapplying to ILR. I have a 3.9x and a lot of ec’s. How were your midterm grades?

@ILRHopeful My midterm was a 3.9 with one upper div (labor history) and two lower divs. What about you?

Seems that few got admitted in CAS according to the past threads…so sad. And results come so late

Hey guys, can you chance me?
I applied to CAS - Government
Stats:
HS - 3.5 GPA
Worked a full - time job through HS. I also became a manager while im HS.
Ranked: 42/114
I am currently attending a CC in NYS.
GPA - 3.77 - Criminal Justice
(3.5 first semester, 4.0 second semester, likely a 4.0 current semester)

Working 2 jobs while at college (full-time student, full time Job).
I had the sheriff of my county, the Deans of my College and an English professor write my recommendation letters.
My essay talked about how I came from the bottom of the latter. How I Came from Puerto Rico not knowing any English and working my way up the latter (moved within 8 different states and 8 different schools) I mentioned how I became a manager while in HS. I also mentioned we lived in a car for a while.
Mid-Term report (A,A,A,A,A,B)

What are my chances???

Anyone please?

hey @edcam, I also applied to CAS, and it seems pretty hard to chance who gets in or not, because it’s the most competitive program for transfer. I honestly think it’s a bit of a coin toss, and will probably depend on the transfer out rate as well (to determine how many open spots are left).

@wilco9997 yes, while you may have a good point, they still have to compare students. They wouldn’t choose randomly. Am I correct?

@edcam It won’t be random but it’s very difficult to predict the applicant pool. For example, they could have a record number of applicants with 4.0 GPA’s and terrific extracurriculars this year or they could have a lot of applicants with 3.4 GPA’s and nothing particularly special about their applications. Whatever the case may be for the applicant pool this year, that’s what your app will be compared to. So in that way, @wilco9997 is totally right that it’s a coin toss.

Anyone else beginning to get anxious about decisions? Even though I know there’s no precedent for it, I still have hope that they could begin next week.

@ILRSLUG the less you think about it, the better you are. I’m certain some or even most of us will get accepted. Me personally, I believe, I have an amazing chance.

What are your stats? @edcam

I think just the fact that im minority, work a full-time job, got a good GPA, got a solid essay and awesome recommendations give me a good chance. Unlike other people, schools like to see students who are committed to work. It shows maturity and integrity which is what all schools look for in applicants.

chance me?

CALS- development sociology

HS-3.25 GPA (3.9 junior/senior year)
4-year varsity wrestler/volunteer youth wrestling coach
chaired events within my Jewish youth group (events consisted of 200-500 people)
volunteer at local food-pantry
over summer worked an intensive cabana-boy job (60+ hours per week)

currently at large NYS university with a 3.58 GPA
Sociology major, business minor
3.31 GPA first semester (had mono and school wouldn’t allow me on campus for 2 weeks, GPA went from 3.8 to 1.8 due to missing midterms week)
3.82 second semester
A/A/A/B/B current mid-term report
rabbi, college advisor (very close with her), and writing intensive course prof wrote recommendations

I know I am a longshot, but what do my chances look like?

Well, I have applied. However, I don’t think I can get in. I am an international student from China, and don’t apply for any financial aid or scholarship. my major is Math. here are my statistics,
1.high school GPA 3.95 out of 4.0
2. College GPA 3.97 out of 4.0
3.Midterm report: A, A, A, A, B, I am taking two graduate level math courses this semester.
4.TOEFL 88, (it is the reason why I don’t think I can get in)
My English is so poor. but I told them I don’t have problem discussing with professors
5. SAT, never taken SAT reasoning test because of my poor English
6. SAT subject tests: Math level 2: 800, Physics: 800
7. get top 300 in Putnam mathematical exam, but I don’t think admission office will know it. But if they know it I think I can get in since it is the most important math competition for US and Canada college students. And I set the record of my current college.
8. Internship in my father’s factory
9. Volunteer in a Church
Having three recommendations from math professors. But I think everyone have three letters.

Followings are my high school’s Prizes
10. Second Prize( provincial level) in CPhO ( Chinese Physics Olympiad)
11. Copper Medal in China’s Southeastern Mathematical Olympiad
12. First prize in Pan-Pearl River Physics Olympiad sponsored by IAS, Hong Kong University of Science and Tech
13. First Prize in my province’s Chemistry Competition
14. Men double Runner-up in my high school’s Badminton Competition

OK, I am currently in a regional University in the USA ( no other choice because of my English)
It is quite impossible to get in because my TOEFL scores is so low. If them offer me, then I will become the person whose TOEFL scores is the lowest in the history of Cornell all the time. It is really another record!!!!

Maybe I should email them in this way: Dear admission office, if you offer me, then I can told a number of international students whose TOEFL is below 100, saying that I got in with a 88 TOEFL score. And I believe at least Chinese students will be encouraged----they will apply for Cornell. At that time you can make an extra money from application fees. In addition, your admission rate will decrease, and maybe decrease to the same level as 7 other ivy league schools. No one will doubt Cornell as a fake Ivy league school

I know I am a Nerd in the eyes of Americans, However, my dream is becoming a math professors. So, maybe it is not necessary to be well-rounded.

@tianyasijunbukewang I hope you aren’t serious about the email!
These decisions are based on academic merit and aren’t a business deal!

Your stats are incredible. You will hopefully get in considering there are not many international transfer applicants that do so well in foreign universities. But please don’t email them in attempts of striking a deal! I’m sure they don’t consider themselves a ‘fake’ Ivy, and neither does anyone with a valid opinion on the matter. @tianyasijunbukewang

@cals2018
Thanks for encouraging me!!!
