Cornell University

After looking through lots of great schools, I'm applying early decision to Cornell :). I would love to get into ILR or their premed program. This is what I'm currently working with

SAT- 2320 in a single setting (750 Reading, 790 Math, 780 Writing)
SAT II- 760-Bio E, 770- Math 2, 750- U.S History
ACT- 35 Composite (36 English, 35 Math, 34 Reading, 36 Science)
AP- 5's- US History, Language and Composition, World History
4's- Biology, Calc AB
3's- Calc BC
PSAT- 221

GPA (3.5 Unweighted, 4.2 weighted) Low I know ;(

I have also taken several courses through Cornell University Summer College obtaining a College transcript GPA of 4.3
Their Debate professor there, Sam Nelson, really liked me, wrote one of my Letters of Recommendation, and said he would guarantee a spot on the debate team if I made it in.

I take a very competitive schedule, especially compared to my local peers, with my current year line up including AP Stat, AP Literature, AP Spanish, AP Psych, AP Govt. and Politics, and AP Chem

Extra Curriculars

Supervising Coordinator for Volunteer Program at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Methodist Hospital)
Team Captain for Varsity Debate Team (placed 6th in state at Public Forum)
State Track (Discus, No medal)
National Honor Society
Nebraska Boys State (2014 Speaker of House)
Job Shadowing at University of Nebraska Medical Center
Various Internships
National Merit Semi Finalist
Student Ambassador Republican Party of Nebraska

I come from a relatively small town in Nebraska, and I'm just trying to make myself stand out. It may be worth mentioning I can pay for my college in full, no need for scholarships (although they are nice). I also may or may not be a legacy there seeing as I have a sister currently attending there as a junior.

Many thanks for the help guys!

You have great test scores and class rigor. Your EC’s are fine. Your transcript at Cornell reflects your interest. Your small town status will help you, as I’m assuming the competition from your school is very minimal. And your sister attending Cornell certainly helps as well. However, you GPA is low for highly selective schools, and will hurt your otherwise pretty good resume. That being said, I think the other parts of your application and Early Decision still make Cornell within reach for you. I would definitely get excited about your other options, but I think you have a decent shot. Good luck!!

By the way, essays will be key for you. Work hard on them, and start early so you have plenty of time to polish them off.

Your stats are great, except your gpa and calc bc score. Did you self study calculus BC? Does your gpa at least show an upward trend? I think that’s going to be the only factor, excluding essays, that wouldn’t get you in. If you’re up to it, maybe get all a’s first semester of senior year, and then apply to RD Cornell. Your ECs are fine, but not great. “Dream to become a doctor” doesn’t really flash out from your ECs. However, your chances at Cornell are high, ED or RD. It’s within reach, so don’t give up!
