Cornell, UVa, Georgetown, etc. WILL CHANCE EVERYONE BACK

High School: I go to one of the best schools in the country, ranked top 5 public school in state consistently.

Grades:
freshman year I did pretty poorly. I only took 2 honors classes out of 5 "majors" ( core curriculum) I got 2 B+ and 3 A-.

Sophomore year I took all honors classes and 6 "majors" with 2 B+ and 3 A- and 1 A.

Junior year I took 7 majors, all honors and 1 AP. At my school, honors curriculum is based off of (or more challenging than) AP classes, and they are weighted the same. I will likely have 3-4 A 3-4 A-.

Senior year I will take AP Calc AB, AP physics, AP stat, AP psych, AP Econ, honors English, advanced (not honors) year 5 Spanish.

I have taken 3 business courses and gotten A in all.
Overall, I will end up with about a 3.7 UW, with my weighted GPA in the top 10% of my class. That being said, I think an upward grade trend is apparent.
My school does not rank.

Test scores: SAT 2300 single sitting. 800 R 700 M 800 W. I retook it June 4 and I expect nothing better than a 770, nothing worse than a 700 in math, with roughly the same scores in Writing and Reading.
SAT II: 770 USH, 800 math II, [MAYBE TAKING BIO FOR CORNELL]
PSAT: 219 (NMS commended for now)

Essays/recs: I have begun writing all essays. CommonApp focuses on personal issues in my life that I am not willing to share with CC, and how they have shaped my interest in management + leadership. Recs will be from English and Bio teachers, maybe my business teacher. Bio/english write excellent recs, business I have heard mixed reviews, but I feel it looks strange after 4 business classes and many business-ish ECs to not get a rec from him.

ECs/awards: NHS (member, only offered senior year @ my school). Class Vice-president (junior+senior year). VP of debate club (co-founder, junior+senior year). President of investment club (junior/senior year). Sophomore year I created a charity 5k road race and shoe drive. I manage a charitable investment portfolio of stocks. Children of divorce mentor. State winner in nation-wide science competition. Consumer science (business) student of the grade. School store--selling school related supplies and clothing (CFO senior year). started company as a part of Business Entrepreneurship class (CEO). This summer I am doing a leadership in business program at Wharton. I have other, scattered, less relevant ECs that I will spare you from having to read about.

If you can't tell . . . I am interested in majoring in finance/business. Any thoughts on my chances at these schools or any other schools you think would be a good fit?

Cornell AEM (ED most likely)
UVa (EA)
Georgetown
UMichigan (EA)
Emory

Thanks! I will chance everyone back to the best of my ability!

I don’t know why you don’t apply to Wharton anyways. Well, GPA is ok, kind of low. You took tough classes and obviously took classes in your field of interest. Investment club, CFO,…

What I want to know more about is the charity that you manage stocks for. That should be something of interest, especially the amount of money invested, to adcoms. Also, get involved with business, vcs, firms, etc. That will help you build connections.

Your chances are ok, just figure out what makes you unique from everyone else in the same vein and you’ll be ok.

Chance me!

chance back please!!!

if you apply ED, Cornell has a 30% ish acceptance rate, so you’ll definitely get in, and you’ll literally have no choice but to go there: that’s my prediction for you, gtown and emory might be a bit difficult, but you’ll probably get in with those scores. the public ivies will be no problem. good luck!!!

I’ll chance you guys when I get home, it’s a little tough on my iPhone. Regarding Cornell’s 30% acceptance rate: I think it’s a bit lower for AEM, and I have heard they take mostly legacy/Athletes at that time. Regarding Georgetown and Emory: I know they are very competitive, but for some reason unbeknownst to me no one from my HS in the past 4 years has not gotten in with y GPA/SAT according to naviance.
Thanks for the feedback

@Butters1, I am concerned that I don’t have a realistic shot at Wharton, otherwise I may apply ED. The charitable stock portfolio is basically my life savings that I invested, donating the profit to a charity. (less legit than what you were thinking, I’m sure)

I think you have a good shot at those schools but especially Cornell if you do the ED because of your EC’s

Awesome, thanks

Do you have the money to pay for these schools or do you need fin aid?

I dont qualify for any kind of aid, but most of these are need-blind anyway

hey just a question- are you required to have a science SAT II for CALS, even if you’re applying for AEM?

It’s only suggested even if you aren’t in AEM, not required. Not sure how important it is for AEM specifically though

Sorry for hijacking the thread  it’s just that we both seem to have the same career/major intents and Cornell AEM is one of the top business programs. Here’s what I found:

Standardized Tests: Either the SAT or ACT with writing is required. It is optional to submit two SAT Subject Tests; mathematics and a science are recommended.

So I’m thinking it’s not a big deal, recommended usually means they want it, but since it’s optional and you can even get by with just the ACT, I wouldn’t go out of my way to take Bio just for Cornell. I’m probably applying to AEM with Math II and World History.

Okay I guess I’ll chance you (please chance me back  http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1161376-please-chance-top-publics-some-privates-will-chance-back.html</a>)

Cornell AEM (ED most likely)
UVa (EA)
Georgetown
UMichigan (EA)
Emory

You have a good chance at all of these, Cornell will be the hardest but you should have a decent chance, especially ED. What are you thinking about majoring in at Georgetown/Emory?

I would study something at Goizueta for Emory. . .probably a finance concentration. At Georgetown a BS in finance from McDonough.

hmm okay. I really don’t know what specific discipline in the business-econ-finance umbrella I want to study yet, but each one is really different. Better than being undecided though!

Both Emory and GTown have really diverse offerings in business. Actually so do all the ones on my (our?) list. A lot of the business programs also give the same degree for difference areas of study within business, but assign a “concentration” of study within that, making it easier to go in under the “business” umbrella and find a passion while there.
The only exception might be that if you are interested in entrepreneurship, you should look at Babson.

I guess I’ll have to do some more reading up then. I just assumed Goizueta (Sp) was mostly for grad and G-town wasn’t very focused on business.

Goizueta was ranked 3 nationally and McDonough 12 I think by businessweek for undergrads. It’s not everything, but I think they are at least worth looking at

Anyone other chance opinions?

B…u…m…p

I think you are in for all of them. Your gap might be a little low, but class rank is more important than gpa, and you went to an extremely competitive school. Your SAT and ec’s more than make up for your gpa. You might just want to pick up a few more backups just in case, something like nyu ( their economics program is really good too). Chance me back?
