nice campus and surrounding area preferred. Cornell ... the location is very safe and very beautiful. Durham is like a battered and beaten Ithaca, i wasn't very impressed when I visited. At Cornell, you can travel just a few minutes off campus to be in the finger lakes wine country or on the edge of a big lake.
weather matters. If you like warm weather, Duke wins.
balanced academic/social experience. Probably a toss up between the two. Duke probably has a bigger balance of leisure time vs. academic time, but 700 student clubs at Cornell does alot to boost the social experience.
