I am deciding between Cornell and Michigan. I am interested in animal science but not sure I want to be a veterinarian yet. I would probably major in biology/psychology and minor in an animal science. I am worried that Cornell is too isolated/too hard of a workload. I would aslo like a school where I could work and do well but also have a good social life. Michigan has great school spirit and a good college town but not as much prestige, it is farther away from home, and does not have an agriculture program. what should I do?

Well, the obvious answer is to apply to both.

I am not sure why you think Cornell would have a harder workload than Michigan. Biology is rigorous at any top university, and public universities tend to have less grade inflation in the sciences than privates do. Several Cornell posters have debunked the “grade deflation” myth.

Cornell would provide significantly more opportunities for a pre-vet student. Cornell CALS, if you are an in-state resident, is also quite a bit cheaper than Michigan OOS. These are things that shouldn’t be taken lightly, in my opinion. Ithaca is a small but rather nice town.

That said, Michigan is an excellent university in a larger and equally nice college town, and if you can afford it, I see no reason not to apply.

Ohio State would be well worth a look. It balances the fun atmosphere of a large public university with very strong programs in animal science and zoology. Pre-vet opportunities are quite good, and Columbus is a great city. Other publics like Wisconsin, NC State, UF, UGA, etc. also provide a good blend.

Where are you more likely to get in with your grades and test scores? And what can you afford to pay?

My parents are willing to pay for either. I am definitely going to apply to Michigan because its early action, but Cornell early decision is binding. I have a much better chance of getting into Cornell if I apply early. But If i get in, I am bound to the school. So I’m not really sure whether or not to apply early to Cornell

Unless you are absolutely sure about a school, don’t apply early decision.

Where are you from and what are your stats? Can you get in to Cornell or Michigan? If so, apply to Michigan early action and Cornell regular. Then worry about your decision.

My D went to Cornell. Yes it is rigorous. But she also had numerous extra curricular activities and many parties. Social life is in no way lacking at Cornell, or any top school for that matter.
