Cornell vs. Northwestern

Where would you rather go, and why?

I’d have to say Cornell for this one. Even though Cornell is in the middle of nowhere, it has strong programs in engineering, business, biology, industrial and labor relations, hotel administration, food science, animal science, natural resources etc…everything is good. Cornell also has a really good alumni network and an excellent Career services department. It’s rated as the #14th best career/job placement services in the country. Also, professors are more accessible and interesting.

Both are great schools. Both have very attractive locations, albeit for different reasons.

So attend the one that you feel more comfortable with when you are on campus.

Cornell, because I get reduced tuition as a New Yorker, and because they have a lot of unique programs. I want to go to the college of HumEc. Northwestern is a great school, but it’s in Chicago (I’m an East coast girl through and through).

I can understand why people pick each school, but it depends on the major you’re interested in and what location you prefer.

Northwestern has a great music program (which is important to me), but Cornell would cost less because I’m instate…
Right now, it’d be Northwestern, but that could change.

Of course, if you were a Music major at Cornell, there would be no cost differential.

And while Northwestern may be better for performance, I would actually argue that Cornell can more than hold its own in composition and theory. And the performing groups on campus (Glee Club, Winds) are quite good.

Northwestern for sure. Better wrestling coaches, smaller school, like campus better, liked kids better.

cysewski vs koll is debatable, but cornell’s a much better team, at least this year. and they’re able to do it without the help of scholarships

I would probably go with Cornell.

gumbi I agree that generally Cornell has a better team than Northwestern, however the coaches at Northwestern are much better.

When in doubt, you can’t go wrong by choosing the school with the best wrestling coaches.

I think I would choose NU over Cornell. I’m applying to both schools, so I would have to get in first. If I did, I would have to pick Northwestern because I would fit into the laid-back culture. I also want to go into econ/business, and it’s hard argue against NU for that.

I’m not certain if one of these schools has more of a laid-back culture than the other. Cornell is pretty laid back and unassuming relative to its East Coast peers.

I can’t speak for their actual coaching ability, but Kroll gives just about the most amusing interviews ever, and he really knows how to draw big crowds to the wrestling matches. To be ranked third in the nation without any athletic scholarships, he has to be doing something right.

plus cornell is the only school in the nation to have its own wrestling arena…

Is it really? Cornell’s AEM was ranked #4 Best Undergrad Business School by BusinessWeek this year. Unless you’re talking about Grad school, in which case I’d pick Northwestern as well.

…why does everyone care about wrestling so much lol? You’d think people smart enough for Cornell/NU wouldn’t pick a college based on a minor sport, but ya never know…

They both attract students of similar abilities; I don’t think there is a tremendous difference between the schools. It may come down to a particular program - for example, in the performing arts, NU is clearly better known, while physics and comp sci are stronger at Cornell. For many kids around here, the small town location of Cornell is something of a challenge. The overall campus feel is different, too: NU is more pre-professional and the kids appear to be more affluent by their dress, etc. I would also say that NU is more social overall. However, both schools are loaded with serious students and I doubt you could tell one school’s engineer from the other’s.

Could you post a link for that?

Tourguide shut up. I am a recruited wrestler, so yes I would pick a school based on that.

Which is what I said.
