I am an international Computer Science student torn between Cornell and Northwestern. I don't need aid at either but PLEASE, PLEASE help me decide between the two:

Pros for Cornell:
-Ivy League - brand name is huge in my country
-Better location than Evanston
-Better rankings than NU (especially in engineering)

Pros for Northwestern:
-I have been invited to be a Murphy Institue Scholar at NU (only 16 kids, design your own major, research grant etc.)
-Top MBA school (looking at MBA for post-grad)

I would appreciate any help whatsover as I need to make a quick decision here! Thanks!

Bottom Line – you’re in a no-lose situation.

In Computer Science, Cornell is Particularly Strong. Northwestern has a fine department, but probably not the same reputation as Cornell. (though honestly, I’m not sure how much difference it makes undergrad.)

Northwestern has a Certificate Program with Kellogg Business school, which I believe can be combined with Comp. Sci. However, I’m almost positive that Cornell has a program with Dyson (in CALS) that provides an engineering/business cross-over.

So, it sounds as if you’re saying that Northwestern offers educational opportunities through Murphy while Cornell has a better reputation in your country. Also, you prefer Ithaca to Evanston.

Personally – I’d go with Cornell if this was how I analyzed it. However, I don’t really know much about the Murphy Institute Scholar Program. If it is truly special, I suppose it could change the answer.

(MBAs – Both Cornell and NU have excellent MBA programs, however, you will most likely go to a different business school than your undergraduate institution, so I wouldn’t worry about that much.)

Dyson is the furthest thing from engineering.

Also, at the undergrad level, your school’s MBA program doesn’t really matter (i.e. a school’s MBA program’s prestige doesn’t really carry over to it’s undergrad school and vise versa).

However, I would not say that Cornell and NU both have ‘excellent’ MBA programs. Cornell’s MBA program is a solid program, but NU blows Johnson (Cornell MBA) out of the water.

Kellogg vs Johnson (if we use USNWR as a cheap source of information) – Kellogg #4, Johnson #16. Edge to Northwestern, certainly, but both excellent schools.

Beat, both schools are equally impressive in this country. Northwestern is just as selective as Cornell, possibly more so.
Concerning the location, have you visited these schools? You said cornell is in a better location. I tell you this because you are international…Cornell is not close to New York City. It is about 4 hour drive away.
Evanston , I believe, is a short train ride outside of Chicago.
