Cornell vs USC helppp now!!!

Hi I'm trying to decide between Cornell (AEM) and USC (Marshall)...i'm from cali so the weather is definetly a factor but cornell is an ivy...i've gone back and forth on this forever and now i need to make a decision!

Dont Choose Because Of Weather

I personally don't know why people are so worried about the weather, moreso about Cornell's weather than other east coast schools. Unless you do something that requires great weather 24/7 like playing street hocky or going parachuting then I don't think weather is a big deal at all. Most of your time will be spent indoors studying anyways.

cant go wrong with either but u live so far away, i guess weather/location has to be a factor

yeah i just dont know how the weather will effect my mood..doesnt it get depressing just studying all the time?

Because there is nothing to do in winter? Yeah right.

Don't be scared of the weather. It really isn't that horrible. I've been there when it was pretty cold, and I'm from California. You'll survive. Plus, if you're going to be paying the same amount, might as well pick the better university. Don't choose usc over CORNELL. =]

Im really tempted to say USC becuase of the weather, but hten you'll realize u go to college for the people....
at no where else can u go across a fridget campus with your best friend eating stuff from the hot truck after a moderate buzz....

at no where else can u be kissed on a suspension bridge...

at no where else can you eagerly wait for the ice to break on the gorges and appreciate spring soo much...

You go to college for hte experience. So think about where u'd fit int he most (haha soo cliched but so true) and ddont rush into this decision

i'd pick USC if i was in your situation. i'm from NY and have actually applied to both Marshall and AEM but i'd only pick AEM b/c its more convenient. you'll get a great college experience at either school. it doesn't matter if Cornell is in the Ivy League..Marshall is a very respectable program. also, USC's business school is currently ranked higher than Cornell's anyway but only by 1 spot lol.

Wait, which part of business do you want to do? If it's finance, Cornell is the better choice for sure. It's an ivy. Also, only if you want to work in SoCal should you choose USC over Cornell. Otherwise, it's not a great idea.

AEM doesn't have many finance tracks...trust me, USC is just as good.

I am in the same situation. I am picking Marshall over Cornell AEM for the networking power, especially in California. I am from CA and I want to eventually work in CA. Marshall also has been making a very strong push to build up connections and alumni network and influence in Asia, which I think will be the ground zero for business opportunity explosion in our generation. I also like the international perspective and lean in the Marshall program. LA is also a more exciting town. The weather-well, what can I say?
In addition, I also like the broad selections of concentrations and minors Marshall offers. Hope this helps.

I think weather is important. In fact, that's one of the reasons why I want to return to CA for med school. However, I still think it's important at some point in your life to live for a while in a place that has real seasons. Some place that's cold enough that your snot freezes over in the winters and where it's hot enough in the summer that you curse your landlord for not installing air conditioning.

yeah..new york is great with that ;]
though, he won't really be able to experience most of those summer days at cornell

Remember there is a long (about 5 weeks) winter break when you aren't dealing with Ithaca weather.

mrod528, So what have you decided?

Academically I think AEM trumps Marshall. However other factors are important too.

It's funny, because I'm somewhat in this situation. I was accepted into Cornell ILR through GT, and will be going to USC Marshall for freshman year, unless I like USC a lot; then I will stay.

If you're thinking about working someday in CA, I would strongly suggest USC, as their Trojan network is remarkably strong.

my friend last year who turned down usc for cornell is loving it there
he said being away from cali opened him up to so many new things and he gained lots of experience/knowledge just by exploring the area around cornell (not..ithaca, more like nyc etc.)
besides, you can always return to cali for grad school if you're planning on doing that

hey everyone. thanks for all your help! ultimately, i decided to put weather aside and choose what i consider to be the best school in cornell...part of my decision was based on what papercuts said about experiencing something new..a lot of people have been telling me that and i think it makes sense.. i do plan on returning to cali (hopefully stanford) to pursue my mba..thanks again!
