I was recently accepted to both Cornell’s ILR school and to UVA as an Econ major, and I’m having a difficult time choosing between the two. I’d appreciate it if people can give any insights/perspectives regarding the pros and cons of the universities/programs, potential job placement, and other factors such as fraternities/social life, dining, housing, etc. If it helps, I want to go into business/finance after graduating.
UVA is a very hard school to get into if you are from out of state because they need to have large percentage of Virginians. Looking at their student profile, 68% of students are from instate, whereas Cornell has less than 30% from NY.
Have you visited both schools? Do you have any preference? Cornell is colder than UVA.
Are you an international? If so, Cornell is better known internationally. Many Cornell graduates get jobs in finance, consulting around NYC.
Cornell has an amazing economics program. UVA is strong, but Cornell’s name carries much more prestige and reputation. Worldwide, Virginia is unknown, although it’s a very prestigious school in the US.
UVA’s undergraduate business program is one of the best in the country but acceptance is a very competitive process during the spring of sophomore year. Once in, you have a great chance for finance, consulting jobs etc it you do well. The alumni network is particularly strong in finance.
One of the toughest admits at Cornell for an incoming freshman is the dyson business school. It’s outstanding as well. What is so great about Cornell is that you can major in anything and get a minor in business. They have so many options for minor candidates and you can tailor it to your interests. I’m partial to Cornell. Wouldn’t encourage anyone to pass up that opportunity. Snow? Gray days? yes, but it’s CORNELL! plus, it’s 4 years. People from literally all over the world seek admission. If you’re one of the lucky ones to have earned an offer, take it.
