What are Cornell's waiting list stats? How many people are usually waitlisted and what percentage of them are accepted?

I believe they didn’t take anyone last year or the year before that. :(

So out of thousands wait-listed, zero were taken?

How is that possible? They would have had to accept more students than their class could fit or else they’d need more people from the wait list to round out the freshman class.

Actually thats exactly how it works. All colleges accept more students then they can actually hold in the freshman class. They just count on a certain number of accepted students to decline admissions. In Cornells case, they know that many of the people they accept won’t go because they either got into havard, yale, columbia, etc or because they cant afford it.

Yup. Each college has a yield rate (e.g. College A ‘yields’ 40% = 40% of those accepted choose to attend College A). That is why they accept more students than will attend. Cornell’s yield rate is about 50%, so they will usually accept 6000-something kids to fill a freshman class of about 3150 students. Part of why places like Harvard have ridiculously low acceptance rates is their high yield. Because 80% of kids who get accepted to Harvard choose to attend, they don’t need to accept as many as other schools. However, sometimes colleges have less students sending in a deposit check than expected - the waitlist is used in that contingency.

However, in Cornell’s case, to my knowledge, they have consistently overenrolled in recent years. I recall some stuff about a few unlucky kids sleeping in dorm lounges for the first few weeks. I guess Cornell doesn’t like playing the “accept less kids than we should according to the yield rate, then accept people off the waitlist so it looks like we have a low acceptance rate” game. Either that or they just need to get better statisticians or something.

kh892 is correct about Cornell trying to hit the yield rate correctly. Cornell does not like to accept fewer people just to get their admit rate lower; the admissions officers will tell you this. Cornell has some of the best institutional researchers in the country, so they’re pretty on-target about how many to admit. However, Cornell’s yield rate has gone up in the past couple of years, so that’s why they haven’t gone to the waiting list.

Having a large waiting list is not uncommon–check out the recent article in the NY Times about it. With Cornell, you need to have a wait list for each of the seven undergraduate colleges, that is diverse in terms of gender and geography.

anyone know when they start letting people know their decisions?

I believe, if they do go to the wait list, that they will start making calls the end of this week/beginning of next.

If they get more than the Target Number enrolling, then they don’t go to the Wait List much - if at all.

(** It looks like they forgot to clear the Wait List fields on the 2001 Common Data Set form, because it is highly unlikely that the numbers would be exactly the same as 2000. But that’s what they posted on the web site.)

has anyone heard from cornell since may 1st about getting off the waitlist? Cause I know Columbia decisions came out yesterday and today.

i emailed them a few days ago and they responded with “we are still evaluating are accepted students, but currently it looks unlikely that we will be using the wait list.”

Damn. I was really hoping Cornell would pull through. I guess I still have Penn and Brown.

Hootie, Penn’s only supposed to be taking like 15! Not good odds!

anyone hear anything from their waitlists?
